this is how you get characters who feel real, because the author treated them like they were. although it can be a frustrating process. one of my characters has been so difficult to crack, so intent on hiding things he sees as shameful that i had to rewrite his scenes MANY times as i kept digging
Unsolicited writing advice, no. 111:
Treat the process of creating a character like that of getting to know a friend. Let them talk. See what you find out. Don't expect to know them fully the first time you meet them on the page. Tease out their past, their secrets. Allow them to surprise you.

now just needs all the likely replacement candidates to come out and say “the prime minister has my full support” then you can be sure he’s a goner
Australian politics nerds know that when a PM’s friends start to leak to the media that he will fight any attempt to replace him, it’s a good sign that his party is organising to replace him www.bbc.com/news/article...
Prime Minister Keir Starmer will fight any attempt to replace him, friends say
Friends of the PM are worried his job might be under threat, perhaps as soon as after the Budget in a fortnight.

Sure, every* game company** is using AI... but using it well? Is it actually helping with ANYthing? Or is it driven by a need to have AI deliver early on the promise of substituting for human labour because there's no other problem it solves?

Kobo is doing a 30 day free trial promotion for their Kindle Unlimited competitor service Kobo Plus for new subscribers (not sure if this is US only), if you like queer indie books, small press SFF, and backlist SFF from large publishers there's a lot to choose from on this service that's not on KU!

Authors, Beware! There's a firm called "ClaimsHero" doing aggressive social media outreach claiming to
"help" you file to get $ in the Anthropic class action. In fact, it's a bait-and-switch, they are luring authors to sign up with them, then OPTING THEM OUT of the class action so they'll get zilch.

actually, being trans is like having a surprise second job you didn’t ask for

it’s just that 95% of the work is self-preservation and wondering whether the car mechanic you usually go to will freak out at you now
being trans is an exercise in irritating considerations no one should ever have to bother thinking about. i need a haircut, but i can’t just get a haircut. i have to think about where i go, what i say, will the hairdresser get cold and uncomfortable when i ask for a masc cut? (has happened)… 1/3

With only days until my very first crowdfund, I feel I must "warn" people that this book is rude and crude. YA levels of edginess, probably. Swearing on every page. Cocks mentioned every other chapter. I'm not even exaggerating 😂

Disclaimer: it does occasionally get serious and people die lol

I feel like there is this recurring thing in internet responses to fiction where anything non-utopian in the worldbuilding is treated as a flaw in the writing rather than the society.
It goes all the way back to “why don’t the characters liberate the droids” which is just as effectively answered with “well why WOULD the characters liberate the droids?”

Not all storytelling is like…utopian humanist worldbuilding.
