"The major forms of life at this time were the arthropods." then mention only meganeura and arthropleura, then ramble about vertebrates 2x the text length of the arthropods

we need more invertebrate people to help make invert knowledge more accessible, like, yesterday

Motion - Flyer

Winged insects make up nearly all of insect species that live today, up to 99.9% of the one million species known today.

Though not as powerful or famous as dragonflies, owlflies too are predators that use their wings to catch other flying insects. 🎨 🐡

Incredibly relateable.

This is one of my favorite specimens I've run into scouring through museums.

Bouba vs kiki - the #minerals edition. Here are two very different types of mineral habits

Left: Chalcedony with a botryoidal habit. This word comes from the Ancient Greek "βότρυς"/"bótrus" (bunch of grapes)

Right: Acicular natrolite. This name comes from the Latin "acicula" (little needle)

I find it very amusing but also slightly disturbing that this species just gets bigger the more it duplicates its genome
some sizable Octolasion tonight. O. cyaneum are the larger, and O. lacteum smaller, but cyaneum varies very widely in size and can be that small. unpleasantly, this is related to the ploidy level of this polyploid, parthenogenetic species: everything from 2n to 12n

Is a fumeless insect preservative too much to ask for?
One that automatically precipitates butterfly scales and other impurities.
Costs nothing and is completely non-poisonous.
Never evaporates allowing insects to rot.
Automatically sorts insects by size, and other features I'll demand in a moment.🧪

Yes, mealworms can eat plastic -- but not fast enough for it to solve our plastic problems, alas.🐛 🧪 www.sciencenews.org/article/worm...
Here’s how long it would take 100 worms to eat the plastic in one face mask
An experiment reveals that a bio-solution to humans’ microplastics mess is likely to fall short, but could inspire other ways to attack the problem.

Imagine your notebook surviving for centuries to be studied by historians. This happened to transcriptions by Nicholai Miklouho-Maclay, Russian of Ukrainian Cossack descent, of a palaeontology class delivered by Ernst Haeckel (1866) This unlikely record, captures the rise of race science in Germany🧵

Two-toned pinchy wasp lass -with wings! The vast majority of the pincer wasp (Dryinidae) females I see have no wings. I have not seen this species before (I have no idea which species this is). She's very cute though. Pincer wasps are basically the mantids of Hymenopterans. I love them of course.

I hope federally funded scientists are preparing for large scale, bad faith attacks by Musk and his troll army.

It’s pretty clear the DOGE operation is going to take snippets of grant proposals and papers, present them out of context, and direct weaponized harassment of individual people.

Really not a fan of "in-person conferences are the best because it let's everyone get together and chat". Sure - undeniably, it provides networking opportunities, but to not offer hybrid options makes it inaccessible for many. And let's not pretend those "chats" don't benefit some over others.
