writing adult fantasy LAMB OF GOD, about a disgraced priest and misanthropic sorcerer tasked with escorting the child of god on her journey across a dying land to receive seven blessings and ascend to sainthood.
i draw them frequently and post writing updates here!

#wipwednesday ch1. the priest, the sorcerer, and the lamb
“Penny!” A voice rang out from the dark. He snapped around, readying himself as best he could for more, only to find a familiar figure brandishing a glaive running towards him. “Dion,” he sighed. Relief both settled him and left him newly aware of a tearing sensation with every inhale. His friend stepped over the threshold with a touch of his fingers to his mouth and looked around, bewildered. “I knew you'd find it first, but I see you’ve already handled it yourself,” he remarked, eyeing the remains of his quarry. When he returned his gaze to the priest, he startled. “God alive— Penance, you’re bleeding badly.” Ah. That was the priest’s name: Penance. He slipped clumsily, unwillingly, back into the skin of a man given a name. “It was summoned,” he rasped, pointing to the scraps of chalk left. “Did you hear me?” Dion asked, stepping closer. His hand carefully moved aside Penance’s veil to look at his wound, a deep set of claw marks just above his chest that had ravaged the meat of his shoulder. When the devil grabbed and threw him, it had gouged him with its long fingers, he thought belatedly. He hoped his blood had not soiled the fountain or floor. “And the Lamb?” The priest woman was quiet again, shifting uncomfortably. “Her Innocence has been kept safe for many years now. Many of the Brides have never even seen her. It is no surprise you will not be introduced until it is absolutely necessary.” The fault of the failed pilgrimage twenty years ago, he thought. When the idea of the Child of God’s immortality was suddenly and resoundingly put to bed, it was no wonder the next one would be ‘kept safe’ for as long as possible. Perhaps her cloistering would make her mutable for his teachings— or perhaps she was rendered witless by a stunted socialization. But it hardly mattered for his ends. The Lamb. Blessed Child of God. Her Innocence. Such pomp for what he presumed to be an unremarkable little thing. He would teach her arcana, and in return his life would be bound to the dear homunculus born of God, the deep cold would finally abate, and he would be Magus of Denibrae for a century to come, or longer. When laid out so neatly, it almost seemed easy. “You have hardly known anything outside this tower. You are so young. Younger than he.” Her voice was low, only a murmur. The Lamb froze, her heart twisting in her chest. Her mother so rarely spoke of him, the one before her. There was a long moment of silence before she remembered, dumbly, to reply— “Oh.” There was so much time, so many years lived before becoming her mother. When she got that faraway look and spoke of His Innocence, the first Child of God she had raised, it was as if she were recalling a monumental past life, one where the child before her had never even been a consideration. The Lamb wanted to curl in on herself as much as she wanted to turn and hug her mother selfishly and cry and be comforted. She did neither. In the face of everything left unspoken between them, all she could do was awkwardly fumble for anything to say.

my other palettes and notes on colors!
1. the first iteration was a bit closer to my initial design's color scheme, with dark emerald and berry pink. it's a little too flat with all the shades of green, not playing enough with hue, but i really loved the emerald/berry color combo. this one also includes a dark colored corset, which we found an important element for the final design. 2. this one referenced shiny meowscarada's color palette, and it just doesn't work to me. way too flat, especially with the cuts in the pants just being another shade of green. i like the more blue-ish leaning green, but in combination with the very yellow gold, it wasn't doing it. 3. the best of the three imo, but still not it. this one referenced a picture of a venetian carnival mask with peacock blues/greens. the sleeves were the constant annoyance in each palette, not wanting them to blend too much with the corset, so they would have to contrast whatever the corset color wound up being. this was the color palette we liked the most, but the light colored corset was the sticking point. i took this palette and tried one more time. (also, the stockings are too dark here, they offset the balance of everything in a bad way.) 4. the fourth try! the dark corset helps to sort of ground the eye in the center of the design, with lighter colors radiating out around it in the sleeves and pants. the gold is allowed to be a little more prominent (the cuts in the pants, the lining of the corset as seen at the bottom), and the greens feel like a proper gamut of hues, less flat. the pink gets to come in just a little within the shadows, which deepens the indigo color of the ruffles and makes their pink eyes pop. i like the indigo/peacock green a lot! i think the design hopefully reads as busy but harmonious.

sacha volkov. a 'mercenary' or traveling priest— an exorcist without tie to any one church hired to escort groups through the dangerous territory between the Saint's protected sanctuaries. the violet tassels are embroidered with a short psalm and indicate his patron saint, the Seventh, Our Vestal of Innocent Love. how well he upholds his vows to them is debatable. he hails from Valkaan, a mountain settlement in the God Spine. the valks have long practiced hunting paternships with the mountain range's whistling wolves, and old partners are remembered by fashioning their pelts into trimmed cloaks, baby blankets, etc. sacha feels that taking up as a traveling priest is best for continuing that tradition, and his partner, kisa, has proven reliable even against devils. his relationship with god is defined by isolation and ever-present danger, but also by the beauty of the world and the fleeting connections he forms within it.
