Because the @nytimes.com no longer has editors in the former sense of the word. The news/politics “editors” there couldn’t pass freshman Journalism 101.
How did the @nytimes.com editors let this sentence appear?

"Critics have likened Mr. Trump’s approach to extortion, while others have chalked it up as a cost of doing business with this administration."

And let’s not forget his hideous father, the LA Eyewitness News reporter who was so over-the-top anti-trans he’s featured in The Lady and the Dale. The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. They’re both “oddly” obsessed with gay and trans lives….
Reminder that in high school, Tucker Carlson listed himself as a member of the "Dan White Society," named after the man who shot and killed Harvey Milk, the first openly gay elected official.

As a @medillschool.bsky.social grad and 25-year former journalist, I’d suggest Northwestern grads immediately unsubscribe from all emails from the university and cancel all giving. They can pay their ransom from somebody else. As a Law Dork paid sub, I’d say this is a great place to redirect some $.
The legal, media, and academic institutions capitulating to an authoritarian ordering payments for favorable treatment are damning themselves to irrelevance. They are destroying their institutions. They will be — and should be — shunned for failing in their most basic purposes for existing.
BREAKING: Northwestern University has agreed to pay the U.S. Treasury $75 million, over the course of three years as part of an agreement with the federal government to restore funding and end investigations into the university

This…. And most political reporters are part of a very small club of insiders for whom engagement is #1 on their to-do lists every single day. Journalism is somewhere in the teens or twenties.

Looks like Trump is smart enough to realize he’s met his match: a much younger version of him capable of whipping him at his own performative game. And it doesn’t help that, unlike Trump’s new Saudi BFF, this Muslim will wear a suit.
1. lol

2. today's White House meeting with Mamdani is currently scheduled as "closed press," which means it might not be much of a showdown

It's a censorship engine designed to promote ideas that Elon Musk likes and suppress ideas that Elon Musk does not like. I really don't get why this evident fact - that Musk openly admits! - is so hard for so many people to understand

Musk: “Because we are failing very badly with the recommendations algorithm. Doing my best to address this.”

If you're trying to convince your friends to spend time on Bluesky rather than X, maybe show them this. X is not "the public town square" or about "free speech." It's "just what Elon Musk wants you to see." If you see stuff he doesn't like he'll step in to make sure you don't see it for long.
If you scroll on X, you are only being shown what Elon wants you to see. If you create content on X, no one will see it unless Elon wants them to.

Something you see with both the ACA subsidy fight and the SNAP disputes is that concrete safety net arguments are very unifying for Democrats.

Don't forget that Zohran Mamdani spent his entire campaign standing proudly beside the trans community. He went to trans rights rallies just to show support. He proudly waved trans rights flags without hesitation. He refused to back down in support of trans rights. That makes me happy.

It’s really more than that. There is plenty of circumstantial evidence from 2024 (i.e. POTUS vote vs. initative votes in multiple red states) that issues are NOT what drives a large plurality or even majority of voters in executive races. It is something else. 1/x
i don’t think you can maximin vote share with polls and spreadsheets, and i think it is a problem that the most prominent and influential political commentators right now are more devotees of data than experts in narrative

One thing conservatives (and now some liberals) hate about @nytimes.com is how superior the publisher and editorial board believes themselves to be. Here’s a great example of their puffery around a long-held pre-conceived notion (moderation is key). 1/2

The paper's arguments hinge on several methodological flaws, and it dismisses valid empirical alternatives. Plus: Gerrymandering, and the Republicans' lost lead on economics

So true. Commercial journalism is dead. Not all elite money’s fault. Info sources have fragmented into a million self-serve pieces. The only ones practicing the craft work for themselves or small reader-supported outlets. The @nytimes.com is irrevocably broken like the rest of trad media. Moving on.
There's just no way to exaggerate how cooked your brain has to be to think like this. Trump is an unprecedented, law-breaking, norm-breaking, increasingly demented maniac who is destroying this country's basic institutions. Like, right now! As we speak!

But media elites find that boring.
