Detailing the history of Dave Stieb, legendary #BlueJays pitcher and Hall of Famer (Canadian Baseball HoF 2005; San Jose Sports HoF 2023)
November 13, 1990 (1/2) - Five years after last appearing on a Cy Young Award ballot, the #BlueJays' Dave Stieb finishes in a fifth-place tie for 1990's top honour, with two third-place votes from 28 BBWAA scribes.

It's the mainstream's belated acknowledgement of his return to form in 1988.

November 8, 2023 (redux) (1/3) - Still got Halls of Fame on the brain (I wonder why).

Here's the San Jose Sports Hall Of Fame 2023 class (Lorrie Fair, Patrick Marleau, Dave Stieb, Chris Wondolowski) with their official plaques, permanently displayed on the concourse at the SAP Center.

November 8, 2023 [continued] - In summer 2023, we were asked to contribute to Dave Stieb's San Jose Sports Hall of Fame induction video, which played just before his acceptance speech.

It's a great clip. Here's our trailer-length edit:📽️

November 7, 2025 (1/2) - Buck Martinez Appreciation Post

October 14, 1976: In the biggest game of his career, Buck goes 3-for-4 in G5 of the ALCS (aka the "Chambliss game").

He's also confounded everyone with the pronunciation of his surname.

We've all been saying it wrong?🤯

November 7, 1948 -🚨 Future Dave Stieb teammate and #BlueJays icon Buck Martinez is born in Redding, CA.🎂

Playing for Milwaukee, he singled in Stieb’s first home start and win, July 9, 1979.

Buck caught Stieb 88 times, to a 3.05 ERA (Stieb's career ERA was 3.44).

November 4, 1982 [P2] - The 1982 Cy Young voting debacle - nicely summed up by Jon Bois' Captain Ahab doc in this clip📽️ - creates a butterfly effect felt even in 2025:

Dave Stieb's easier to overlook by Era Committee Hall Of Fame panels without that hardware, isn't he.

November 4, 1982 [P1] - Oh, goody! Time for this old favourite again.

The 1982 AL Cy Young Award vote's in. Milwaukee's Pete Vuckovich wins. The #BlueJays' Dave Stieb's fourth.

Look at Pete's K:BB ratio!

November 3, 2025: The @baseballhall.org's released its 2026 Contempoary Era Hall of Fame ballot.

There's a legendary #BlueJays player included, but it's not Dave Stieb.

Six hitters, two pitchers - the split we hoped and expected.

Results announced December 7.

More to come.

November 2, 2025 - The 2025 Blue Jays - a likeable, great team - lost a marvellous World Series last night.

The one of us here who's less partisan, perhaps a bit angrier about the org's legacy-ignorant shenanigans, began wondering whether there was a curse.

Maybe it's real. #CurseOf37

November 1, 2025 (1/2) - Tone deaf move by the Blue Jays to give Jack Morris the first pitch tonight (alongside Paul Molitor, mind).

Never mind the career-long feud with Dave Stieb. Never mind the fact Stieb didn't throw a pitch this month.

Jack Morris is just a disappointing human.

October 30, 1984 (1/3) - Cy Young votes are in!

Dave Stieb's modern-day case:

2.83 ERA (2nd; Boddicker 2.79)

He finishes... seventh.

With one vote.

October 28, 1985 (1/2) - 🚨 "Dave Stieb, you're going to Disneyland!" (Okay, they probably all went after winning the World Series in 1992, but here he is after the ALCS defeat, winding down with his family...) 🚨

October 26, 1992 [P2]: Tom Cheek and Jerry Howarth emcee the rally inside SkyDome, with 40-odd #BlueJays briefly taking the mic.

Most keep it pretty basic.

Dave Stieb’s bottled a lot of thoughts in 14 years with Toronto. He’s not an over-sharer.

🚨Today, though, he lets it all out.📽️

October 26, 1992 [P1]: The championship parade! The icing on every pro athlete's bucket list cake.

October 24, 1992 [Last-night-in-Dave-Stieb-history print edition] (1/3) - The game ended late at 12:51 a.m. EST. Newspaper print rooms would run hot through the wee hours.

Throughout Canada, people spilled onto streets.

In Atlanta's visitors' clubhouse, the #BlueJays rejoiced.

October 24, 2025 (1/2) - Timing: it's everything.

There're only two pitchers in #BlueJays history to make the jump from the June amateur draft to their MLB careers the very next season.

One is Dave Stieb.

The other starts Game One of the 2025 World Series tonight.
