Did some research related teaching stuff today. Trying to figure out to pull down a cutout of an asteroid imaged by Rubin Observatory, had 2 meetings with grad students, and dealt with other admin. I also attended the School’s (wider department) gender minority coffee hour that I helped organize.

SocArXiv announces moratorium on AI-topic papers
In light of record submission rates and a large volume of AI-generated slop, SocArXiv recently implemented a policy requiring ORCIDs linked in the OSF profile of submitting authors, and narrowing our focus to social science subjects. Today we are taking two more steps:

"Starship" is quite a name for a rocket that can't even escape low-earth orbit. Maybe it's a tribute to the rock band
Starship doesn’t have enough launch fuel to escape low-earth-orbit, so SpaceX’s plan for Artemis III is to launch one, and then launch a bunch more Starships (at least 14!!) with a cargo of extra fuel, and gradually refuel the first one in orbit so it can get it the moon

That’s the actual plan

Don't underestimate where China's science will be in a decade. However, for China to truly be a global leader, Chinese science needs to be less misogynistic and hierarchical, and early-career scientists need to be given the freedom to be creative and not work like robots.
Why the world must wake up to China’s science leadership
The nation’s next generation of scientists and technologists will shape the coming decades.

Avi has risen to new levels of Galilean messiah-complex absurdity, implying that the latest calculations of 3I/ATLAS’ trajectory were made to counter his claim of alien intelligence directing where the comet is headed. 🔭

🔭 The new @esa.int budget secured today is a big deal imho. +30% compared to the current budget with largest chunk going to space transportation ie 🚀. Science/astro is also getting a big bump, which DG Aschbacher called ”the backbone of the ESA programme”. Some funding optimism to close off 2025! 💫🥹

The UK will invest £1.7 billion in ESA programmes, driving economic growth, strengthening national security and supporting innovations in connectivity and public services.

I really hate it when scientists keep saying that “we need to rebuild trust in science,” because it implies that scientists are to blame for the mistrust rather than the millions of dollars of dark money that have funded political attacks on science in order to advance a far right agenda.

I never bought into Blu-Ray. DVDs were a game-changer compared to VHS, Blu-Ray merely a techno-trolling for people's disposable income. And Microsoft backed Blu-Ray because it fit their business model... of trolling for people's disposable income.
One big red flag about “AI” that makes me doubt it will ever be useful is… I don’t feel like I’m missing out on anything. When the iPhone came out, when Twitter came out, heck when the PS2 came out, I could tell that people were able to do things I couldn’t.

I don't assume technological solutions will fix cultural/behavioral problems.
⚠️ When “technology will save us” becomes a climate risk!

A new paper from great colleagues takes a careful look at techno-optimism — the belief that technology will largely solve climate change — and what it means for real-world climate action.
