Shame on the @sfgate.com for promoting the imprisonment of Cecil. Gorillas are cognitively and emotionally complex beings who deserve to live freely. The San Francisco Zoo is exploiting him for profit and to satisfy human curiosity. Cecil should be rewilded or freed to sanctuary.

Do better.

Say hello to Cecil, the San Francisco Zoo’s new gorilla. The 26-year-old male silverback arrived from the Louisville Zoo in Kentucky in August and has spent the past few months settling in and getting to know the zoo’s resident females.

Cecil will make his official public debut Saturday, Oct. 18.

Two years ago, I helped develop and pass the first U.S. law recognizing a right for a nonhuman animal—elephants’ right to liberty. 🐘 It remains one of the proudest moments of my career and a major victory in the Nonhuman Rights Project’s work to secure fundamental rights for nonhuman animals.
