Data Science student; Pittsburgher.

Between bouts of existential dread, I spend an inordinate amount of time getting really upset about cars, poor land use, Ukraine, and climate change/sustainability.

Someone should do a segment where they ask a pundit to defend several DHS posts, but sneak a couple examples of posts from known neo-nazis just to watch them spin those.
Consider how few anecdotes it took for the media to declare a Free Speech on Campus crisis.

Every day we get more evidence that the Republican Party is teeming with white supremacists yet elite institutions refuse to frame this as a crisis that needs the nation’s attention.
DHS posted a disturbing video today featuring a song that’s popular with Nazi creators

Imagine a CEO laying off a bunch of people and then giving himself a bonus by suing his own company and then immediately settling the lawsuit in his own favor.

Except you’re the people and it’s your money, and you’re technically his boss.
Breaking News: President Trump wants $230 million from the Justice Department for investigating him, people familiar with the matter say. Any settlement might ultimately be approved by senior department officials who defended him or those in his orbit. nyti.ms/4hmIi5X

Cyberpunk world where the neon aesthetic is the result of a runaway series of pedestrian safety initiatives.
Why don’t we just paint everything neon: People, clothes, pets, poles, buildings, trees , lakes, rocks, every goddamn inch of this planet neon.
Hey Marylanders! Darker evenings don’t mean more danger on our roads. Just a little extra caution — bright clothes, headlights on — can make a huge difference.

Let’s keep each other safe. Be the difference!

Least important observation in the United States right now but whatever happened to naming things like AmRx or USRx.

If any other president in all of history said the military should use American cities as a training ground he would be removed from office that same day. The hardest thing to tolerate in all this is how relatively silent elected democrats are. It’s ridiculous.

“We are under invasion from within, no different than a foreign enemy, but worse—they don’t wear a uniform.”

This is the President of the United States, who ordered the entire leadership of our military to sit and listen to him, speaking a few minutes ago.

Deploying our superb armed forces on American soil, in peacetime, against Americans, is an illegal and unspeakable perversion of our men and women in uniform.

Military rule will bring profound and lasting harm to all of us. Conservative and Liberal Americans reject it. We the people reject it.

Leaving yourself unmuted in a Zoom meeting with 87 people is a form of violence against me personally.

Luckily this regime is known for precision, restraint, and caution with who they target.
Pretty crazy how "America is a legit, no bullshit fascist country" is now a NYT headline.

It's kinda remarkable we can live in such hyper partisan polarized times yet a key vector of political violence be nonpartisan (but still generally right wing) nihilist political violence
oh so the guy was another hyper online nihilist?

what was the point of any of this pain
You're going to see a lot of "he's a violent antifascist leftist" and "he's a groyper" but the core of Tyler Robinson's motivation is almost certainly that he's an online-poisoned idiot gamer.

I thought for a while that waiting 3 weeks just to get rejected was the worst.

But it turns out it’s waaaay worse to get rejected 48hr after applying.

JD Vance said he doesn’t care if the US commits war crimes. Did it make the news?

Donald Trump said he’s declaring war on Chicago. Did it make the news?

Executive agencies keep posting Nazi blood-and-soil propaganda. Did it make the news?

Hot take: You can be heterosexual, handsome, wear Ralph Lauren, and not be a Nazi all at the same time.
Opinion: For those used to her softer sensibilities, Taylor Swift’s current lifestyle is giving Maga energy. It’s brazen, proud and 10-carat garish. It’s Ralph Lauren and USA. on.ft.com/3UR0ISe

this stuff breaks you down the longer you stare into it, primarily because you can see the nihilism in the act infect discourse and the social fabric around you

i have cried today
My take is, “I get paid to suffer through looking at and analyzing this shit myself and people like me should be the only ones doing analysis about it. Turning it into CONTENT and DISCOURSE is what the shooter would want the most.”

If “grade 6” of your pay scale contains a monthly salary that would not allow a person to qualify for any apartment in the city that your company is in, then you need to really consider what is happening to people in grades 1-5.

I think the biggest indicator that I have done all I can do/desire to do at my current job is that I spent days struggling to come up with a single goal for my annual performance review, and now 2 months later I have achieved that goal.

remember folks, we cant have gun restrictions because if we do the federal government will occupy our streets, imprison people without due process, ship dissidents to foreign gulags and things of that nature

“Oh then I guess I’m fascist” is truly what you often get when you confront people with the reality of it.
Our own authoritarian era has convinced me that the restoration of liberal democracy will be an elite persuasion project to strip the state of its legitimacy. Right now, many think that shouting "Fascism!" will arouse a popular resistance, but it mostly makes people realize they're OK with fascism.
