The biggest squid in the world is the Colossal Squid, the largest invertebrate by mass, reaching up to 14 meters and over 500 kg, while the Giant Squid is longer, potentially reaching 13 meters or more, but is less massive, with both species living in the deep ocean and being rarely seen.

1/2 #speaciesaday no. 680 is Stictoleptura scutellata. A large, solid, all-black (with an orange scutellum) Nationally Scarce longhorn beetle. Commonest in Beech woodland, seems to be fairly common around the New Forest but it's very scarce in Sussex. All my records are between 30th May & 11th July.

Main picture shows a fallen branch which is already covered in new life. The Coral spot fungi is the most prominent but a moss species is also starting to colonise the branch and traces of lichen can also be seen. Three pics of other fungi seen today too.
