thank you, joe, for volunteering to go first!
A Palantir billionaire just called for public hangings.

“It's time to bring back masculine leadership to protect our most vulnerable,” writes Joe Lonsdale.

This is where Silicon Valley authoritarianism is heading:

not that this won't happen anyway, but if i'm virginia or california i'm copying and pasting whatever texas did/said and just swapping the mentions of the parties

if they're going to do it, make them do it in a way that leaves no room for doubt about what hacks they are
I assume the Roberts Court will rule every Democratic gerrymander illegal based on the legal doctrine of Fuck Democrats and there will nothing anyone can do about it
If Virginia Democrats follow through with a new 10-1 congressional map and a couple of other Dem states make small changes, Trump's gambit to rig the 2026 maps will be remembered as an epic blunder.

one of the things i have a weirdly strong opinion on is that this is the cut that should be in the library of congress

the technical achievements of the original are not trivial, and that's really the legacy that should be preserved

a fun question to ask someone who believes in rigid separation of powers is "who decides what is constitutional?"

if your answer does not include all three branches + the citizenry at large, then you're getting docked points!
the other claim that demands an [argument needed] is that the constitution requires a rigid separation of powers, a claim that would have been a surprise to the people who drafted and ratified the constitution.

"she wore a leotard, boots, a bracelet, and *nothing else*"

what else is she supposed to have on here, olivia? she's got shoes and a shirt, she can get service in any restaurant in the country
I cannot convey to you the sheer fucking weirdness of Olivia Nuzzi's book.

this whole display is just disgusting

just once i would like one of these reporters to find their balls and either interrupt or follow up with "what have they done? describe it"
Trump, continued: "What the Somalian people have done to Minnesota is not even believable. It’s not even believable. And a lot of it starts with the governor. A lot of it starts with Barack HUSSEIN Obama, because that’s when people started coming in... They want to kiss our country good night."

1) yes, because video games

2) is the exculpatory story here that he couldn't see survivors so they decided to waste more missiles just to be sure? the "no no it's ok" is that we're spending taxpayer dollars double-tapping fishermen like they're fucking zombies?
Wait, does he think the fog of war is literally smoke?

"they come from hell and do nothing but bitch" is now the backstory for my next d&d character
here's Trump's full racist rant about MN's Somali community: "Somalians ripped off that state for billions. And they contribute nothing... Ilhan Omar is garbage. She's garbage. Her friends are garbage. These aren't people that work... They come from hell & do nothing but bitch. We don't want them"

my car is salty at me because one tire is at 28 pounds of pressure instead of 32

who are these people in front of me spending two full minutes putting air into one tire? how low did you let them get??

can someone describe to me the admin's "widening crackdown on industry"? was that the day's euphemism for "mafia-style shakedown" or "wanton, unfocused destruction"?

cocaine is one of their party drugs, this is just ensuring cheap supply for all the nose-candy enthusiasts in this admin
“He once boasted that he would “stuff the drugs up the gringos’ noses.” He accepted a $1 million bribe from El Chapo to allow cocaine shipments to pass through Honduras.”

Now Trump set him free.

oh hey, it's my rep, who is now running for senator! saying completely crazy nonsense on the tv, of course
HINSON: As a mom, I think about watching a baby monitor. That's a very intimate moment with your baby and to think the Chinese could be spying on your morning routine

BARTIROMO: Why are they spying on moms?

HINSON: They just want to know what Americans are up to to undermine our way of life

i want to note two things about this video:

1) part of the answer to "how is she so good at this" is the six to seven seconds she takes to gather her thoughts, rather than just rambling as her brain works

2) she's told about this live and can react to it. what's mike johnson's excuse?
AOC to @pabloreports.bsky.social : A swastika is one of the clearest symbols of hatred in all of humanity… to remove that designation… indicates a possible collaboration with those very elements, which I think is genuinely frightening to any American.

continues to amuse me how trump's base understands his message -- impunity for his violent goons -- with crystal clarity while so many ivy-leaguers in the media can't, or pretend they don't
An ICE employee was among 16 men arrested after trying to solicit a minor for sex in Bloomington, Minnesota, police say

"When he was arrested, he said, 'I'm ICE, boys,'" Bloomington Police Chief Booker Hodges said during a press conference. "Well, unfortunately for him, we locked him up."

crazy thought: could we try putting people in charge who are *not* diametrically opposed to the mission and values of the things they're supposed to be in charge of?
Former UVA president Jim Ryan, who resigned over the summer due to pressure from the Trump Administration, just shared this 12-page letter with the Faculty Senate, detailing his experience with the Board of Visitors and DOJ.

It's a surreal--and troubling--read.

why am i thinking of this today? because this sort of pedantic quibble can be funny after the fact, but if you were making this point *while the fire was still raging,* instead of doing anything about it, you'd be liable to get punched in the face
there's an old joke about a guy telling his friend that his furnace caught fire in his basement, destroying his home, and the friend says "sorry your house burned down"

the man replies with "weren't you listening? it burned up!"

we got four years of "we're not the opposition, we're journalists" as the response to every criticism, valid or not, during trump 1

i do think some people noticed that they followed that up with four years of flat-out opposing biden
I think the Biden debate was extremely clarifying for a lot of folks

regardless of where you fell on the “Biden should step down” issue, it was obvious what it looked like when the Times really went all in

not a single thing Trump has done has, apparently, merited the same level of focus
It's more that people have noted how adversarial they were with Biden and Democrats and how that attitude completely vanishes with Trump and Republicans.

if you're a journalist

and you see these emails between the sex trafficker and the times

and your instinct is to say "now hold on, it's not as bad as it looks" rather than "holy shit, time to start digging"

then i don't think you're very good at your job!
