My god, I just found this stunning freeform crochet blanket of British birds - every bird was created with no pattern and trial/error to get them looking right, and it's an absolute work of art 😍 I wish I had the skills, but alas, using patterns is all I'm able to do!
A crochet blanket featuring British birds - against a swirling blue background of different colours of blue and grey, bringing to mind an English sky, there are eleven birds featured, all crocheted using a freeform, no-pattern technique. The birds are: mallard, kingfisher, heron, bullfinch, great tit, long-tailed tit, goldfinch, robin, magpie and green woodpecker (and the fact I could name them all from the way they're represented in yarn shows how brilliantly they've been crafted!)

the eel tells heron who she is. a creature of night, she loves the reeds and sways as they do when the air above the river is warm. where you see the palm fronds, I see whales. trawlers nets. globules of white plastic, floating like fairies. glitter.

what do eel and heron talk about?
dreams. eels dreams, memories, childhood memories. trawlers and the screams of the squid. long expanses of silence, then low rumbling. cracking rock. the eyes of the shark, the shapes against the sunlit shallows. warm coastal currents, barren wastelands of seabed.

Friends...I've had a disjointed day today, and I realize that I've gotten very far into it without giving you the eels you so richly deserve. A tragedy!

So please: enjoy this Eel King from 1445 (with a heron beak?) eating an eel of it's own. And come back tomorrow, for more eel history!
A drawing at the bottom of a bit of latin writing. There is an "s" whose tale turns into an eel with a heron's beak. The eel is wearing a crown, and is eating a smaller eel, which also has a heron's beak. It's too hard to see, but we can hope that this eel-heron is eating an even smaller one, and that it's heron-beaked eels all the ways down. I like that the king of these eels -- a very fanciful beast -- is growing out of the "s" in the the latin word "Si", which means "if". The whole creature is a masterful bit of subjunctive speculation. The word "if" is creating it's own world of IF's. And the mighty Eel of If's might just rule all.
