"Wholesale electricity prices in the United States and Europe have risen by 30–40 percent in the past year alone, largely due to higher gas prices." Increased demand is also an issue, with data centers one major cause of increase.

Gas prices (nat gas/methane) are making electricity more expensive in the U.S. There is broad agreement among analysts that as US LNG export capacity doubles in the next 4 years that US gas prices will go much higher. And thus so will domestic electricity prices.

I'm behind on my reading, but this is a big deal, a crucial reframing, and very disturbing.

Also want to highlight the great set of secondary conclusions, incl. that other countries should take an extra conservative approach to evaluating the climate impact of US LNG
New paper. I wish this wasn't the case, but most progress on reducing US greenhouse gas emissions is likely spurious. Why? EPA underestimates methane emissions from oil and gas. Relevant today as Repubs vote to gut IRA's methane monitoring/mitigation program. 🧵

Happy Birthday, Rosalind Franklin. She captured an X-ray diffraction image of DNA and stated that a helical structure was probable. Watson and Crick then created a detailed model based on her results. They initially received credit for the discovery and were awarded the Nobel Prize after her death.🧪

Anyone who blames the failure and success of nuclear power in the U.S. to just one issue (cost, build time, NRC,...) ignores the fact that nuclear power faces many other issues worldwide (mining, enrichment, refueling, waste storage, meltdowns, proliferation,...).

While Gov Hochul says NY needs to go slow on climate goals & should use an "all of the above" energy approach with a lot of new nuclear, I counter that nuclear is too expensive & too slow, and renewables can do the job, with no slow down on climate.
