It is with profound sadness that we share that Professor Andrea Evers passed away. Andrea was a visionary leader, a brilliant scientist, and a compassionate colleague.
As we begin to process this immense loss, let us remember Andrea for her remarkable legacy and kindness she brought into our lives.

🚨 Fresh preprint w/ @helenblank.bsky.social!

How does the brain acquire expectations about a conversational partner, and how are priors integrated w/ sensory inputs?

Current evidence diverges. Is it prediction error? Sharpening?

Spoiler: It's both.👀

Any time a paper reports an AUC of 1.0 on test data, my hackles are raised. This commentary by @olegolt.bsky.social @tspisak.bsky.social @christianbuchel.bsky.social nicely dissects problems with a recently reported "biomarker" for pain.

Serious concerns about a new cortical biomarker for pain sensitivity

jamanetwork.com/journals/jam...

We (with @tspisak.bsky.social, @christianbuchel.bsky.social) published a commentary on Chowdhury, Bi et al. (2025, JAMA Neurology) raising serious concerns about their reported results.

Concern About Predictive Performance of a Pain Sensitivity Biomarker
To the Editor Chowdhury et al1 evaluated a biomarker for pain sensitivity, combining peak alpha frequency and corticomotor excitability. The authors report outstanding performance (validation set area...

Very sad news! She was my dear desk neighbor at UCL for many years. She made outstanding contributions to the science of learning and memory, and the fact that one of her PhD students was awarded a Nobel Prize in 2024 further highlights her exceptional abilities as a mentor in the field of science.
It is with profound sadness that we share the devastating news that Eleanor Maguire passed away on January 4th. She was a phenomenally brilliant neuroscientist, with immense passion for her work and many remarkable accomplishments. We will miss her terribly.

Excited about the next SIPS conference on all things #placebo and #nocebo in Krakow! For the second time, there will also be a (free!) summer school for Early Career Researchers on the two days before the conference. Be an early butterfly and register soon!

Interested in #placebo #suggestion #nocebo effects? Consider attending the upcoming SIPS (Society for Interdisciplinary Placebo Studies) conference in Krakow in June. It's preceded by a methods workshop, which should be great. At least 1-2 people from our lab will be there.

Check out our new review on "How control modulates pain" doi.org/10.1016/j.ti.... We have not only summarized many studies in this field, but also suggest that in the context of a Bayesian pain model, control might be mediated by changes in expectation.

This is our large magnet with the radio antenna. With this, several brains can look at one brain. And you can make nails on a thread fly - at least a famous physicist in the institute can make this happen.🧠🧲⚡

Check out our 🔥 preprint on paradoxical heat! Big shoutout to @agmitchell.bsky.social and the team for the awesome work 👏
Super excited to share our new preprint, the first from my new postdoc!

We attempted to unravel the phenomenon of Paradoxical Heat Sensation (PHS) using computational principles from vision science in a large-scale psychophysical study (n > 200).
