Emergency geek, space geek…pretty much all things geek. Emergency manager. Amateur radio (W6YTB). Former firefighter & DMATer. Husband and empty nester dad. He/Him
20 years ago today, I was on a plane with my DMAT CA-1 teammates flying east for my first disaster deployment. Didn’t fully appreciate what the next 2 weeks would involve at that time, but I came home changed.

More on the Eaton Fire and JPL through interviews with Lab Director Dr. Laurie Leshin, Deputy Director Leslie Livesay, and my boss Ian Pinkham.
Firefighters save NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory

Last Tuesday night I got in at 6PM for night shift in our EOC for the high winds we were experiencing that day.

17 minutes later the Eaton Fire was toned out. We spent the night watching the flames march towards us from the front door of our building as we prepared the best we could.

What a great show!
About to see Cirque de Soleil Mystère at Treasure Island, which is celebrating its 30th year. 20-some years ago I got to tour this theater as a technical tour for a conference (American Society of Safety Engineers I think). Looking forward to finally seeing the show after seeing backstage.

NEW: A security researcher has shown how digital license plates can be hacked to enable a less benign feature than adding novelty message to plates and reporting a car missing: a jailbreak that can alter a car's plate number to avoid traffic tickets and tolls—or even pin them on someone else.
Hackers Can Jailbreak Digital License Plates to Make Others Pay Their Tolls and Tickets
Digital license plates sold by Reviver, already legal to buy in some states and drive with nationwide, can be hacked by their owners to evade traffic regulations or even law enforcement surveillance.

As a proud former UCSC firefighter, was very excited to learn that the banana slug is now the Official State Slug of California. Go Slugs!

Not a big fan of plumbing, but of all the potential plumbing projects, replacing a toilet fill valve is one of the less onerous ones.

The WHO has certified Egypt, home to 100 million people, as malaria-free. Dr. Tedros poetically stated, 'Malaria is as old as Egyptian civilization itself, but the disease that plagued pharaohs now belongs to its history and not its future.' https://buff.ly/3Upborh

I really love California’s ballot tracking process.

Got email on 10/7 telling me ballot had been mailed to me.

Mailed it Mon & got email Tue AM telling me USPS collected it.

Got email today telling me county registrar received it.

Will get another email once it’s counted or if there’s a problem.

Back in the office recovering from another successful Great ShakeOut earthquake exercise last week. This year was challenging from a planning standpoint due to various other unanticipated calls on my time but it all went off well. Now just have to write the AAR & Improvement Plan.

Deployed with my DMAT to Katrina in ‘05 & Ike in ‘08 so I’m not totally unfamiliar with hurricanes. 🌀
I’m a California emergency manager. Hurricanes really aren’t my bag (at least not since I was on my DMAT). Yet Milton has consumed most of my professional time the past two days due to the storm coinciding with a goodly number of our staff & execs being in it’s path right now for an event.
