Actin, imaging, neurodegenerative disease. World record holder for Phish shows attended by a cell biologist. Associate Professor at MCG-Augusta University.
Honored to have gotten third place in this year's Small World in Motion competition. And yes, I did take this movie myself! Sometimes you have to go back into the lab and show them that you've still got it.
🎉 🔬 We’re thrilled to announce the winners of this year’s #NikonSmallWorld in Motion video #Microscopy competition: bit.ly/4mtjUk7

🥇 1st place goes to Jay McClellan of Saranac, Michigan (USA) for his video capturing self-pollination in a thymeleaf speedwell flower.

I was impressed with SiR-XActin: similar labeling of F-actin as Lifeact, didn't detectably alter actin dynamics, and because it can remain in solution while imaging, photobleaching is not a major concern (Below, LA required correction, SiR-Xactin did not). Happy to have played a small part in this!

New actin probe from @veselin-nasufovic.bsky.social et al! SiR-XActin and its variants are more photostable and less perturbative than SiR-actin or FastAct. And it's already available from @spirochrome.com! With some beautiful data from @chillinwithpfn1.bsky.social:

On behalf of Bruno, Tracy-Ann, and CAD cells everywhere, I humbly accept this honor 🙌
📢 Our 2024 Cover of The Year 📸 goes to this beautiful, super-resolution spinning disk confocal image of a cath.a-differentiated (CAD) cell stained for F-actin, microtubules, & mitochondria. Congrats to Bruno Cisterna, @chillinwithpfn1.bsky.social and colleagues 🎉 https://buff.ly/4jpCgSQ

CAD cells getting weird. This is a SoRa spinning disk confocal image, with many fields tiled together. You can keep zooming in for additional detail. Green = microtubules, white = F-actin, pink = DAPI.

FMRP regulates MFF translation to locally direct mitochondrial fission in neurons - Nature Cell Biology
Fenton et al. show that FMRP granules dock at the mitochondrial midzone in a Rab7-dependent manner in axons and dendrites, where they promote local MFF synthesis and fission at the mitochondrial midzo...

Reconstitution of Arp2/3-nucleated actin assembly with proteins CP, V-1, and CARMIL
Mooren et al. show that membrane-bound CARMIL activates capping protein (CP) by dissociating CP from V-1, thereby promoting actin polymerization nucleated by Arp2/3. The activity of CP is a critical d...

Hi everyone! Kicking off my first #FluorescenceFriday here with a 3D SIM image of actin, and of course had to go with my favorite blue LUT (JDM Duo Intense Cyan) for Bluesky.
