China might see an opportunity here. If Japan’s move creates some market turbulence, China might decide to add to the pressure by selling off some of its own holdings. And with the whole BRICS angle, there’s definitely a strategic element at play here. China has the better cards to play.

As of January 2025, Japan held about $1.079 trillion in U.S. Treasury securities. Recently, Japan has been selling off some of these holdings—like between March 30 and April 5, 2025, when they sold around 2.57 trillion yen in foreign long-term debt securities! They also announced another on 4/28
