I'd love to see them recruit Regional Reading Ambassadors for this - children's authors sent to schools and libraries to host book clubs, run reading workshops and activities around books, make kids feel like reading isn't just another step in becoming a Good Little Employee once school is done
A National Year of Reading will take place in 2026 aimed at curtailing the reading crisis among children and young people. The initiative was launched by education secretary, Bridget Phillipson ahead of a reception to be held at 10 Downing Street 👇 #BookSky

My top tips for #NationalStorytellingWeek:

1) Write the story YOU want to read.

2) No writer can write a perfect story in one draft. You need to write, read, edit, rewrite. Rewriting IS writing! (see art below, by Charles M Schulz)

3) Whatever happens - NEVER GIVE UP!

I think it's all about finding things that engage their interests. Whatever they love - there will be reading matter on that subject. And it's about being open to formats - comics & manga all count as reading! Here's a blog I wrote that I hope might be helpful:

If you don’t have a local library card, it should be your New Year’s resolution to get one. It’s an easy resolution to keep and you’ll actually use it, trust me.

Reading can have big benefits for children from vulnerable family backgrounds - including supporting emotional regulation, as Amy from Hull Children's University explains.

Our #StoryExplorers programme has been designed to help families discover these benefits:

Support independent bookshops! They are such vital spaces - places of genuine connection and humanity, increasingly rare in this world. And there is no better gift you can give to anyone of any age than BOOKS!
Happy Saturday, friends. I'm going to spend the day working in the bookshop. We're very busy this close to the holidays. In fact, I read somewhere that indie bookshops make a third of their yearly income during the build-up to Christmas, so choosing to use them now helps them survive all year!
