I am very much no longer a pacifist. I think fascists need to be fought with any and all means necessary. Laying down the threat of violence means fascists will eventually win.

Seeing a lot of people being real black and white about the moral calculus of war.
It seems a lot of people see conflicts in black and white, like one side MUST be right and one MUST be wrong. But both sides can be wrong, and to varying degrees. This goes for everything, internet beefs, geopolitics, etc. Yeah the US is bad, but that doesn't mean China/Russia must be good.

I guess I don't really understand the rationale when people say it's worse to kill people with nukes than conventional means in a total war? Was it okay that tens of millions of people died because it was from normal bombs and disease and starvation? It's suffering both ways

So was the conventional bombing of Japan ok cuz they didn't use nukes even though tons of civilians still died?

People get really mad about this, but I think people don't really understand this was a total war? There were no non-military targets because 100% of the economy supported the war. And like, tens of millions of civilians died in WW2, less than 1% were from nukes.
Everyone loves to criticize Truman for using atomic bombs, including my younger self, but nobody can ever come up with a good answer on what they would have done differently to end the war.
