I saw someone post on here earlier today about why is it that only AI luminaries consistently turn out to be horrible people but it doesn’t happen in fields like biology, and that just isn’t true.
Hey folks, as news of Watson's demise spreads, please don't set aside his weighty legacy of misogyny and racism. He was truly among the worst of us. www.vox.com/2019/1/15/18...
DNA scientist James Watson has a remarkably long history of sexist, racist public comments
“People say it would be terrible if we made all girls pretty,” he said in 2003. “I think it would be great.”

Look what happens when you give full criminal immunity to someone who didn't believe the rules apply to them anyway. Sometimes imagining the worse case scenario is appropriate basis for judicial decision making.
Because how do you hold people to the law when you actually can't?

PEOPLE GET TO HAVE FUN IN LARGE GROUPS IN PUBLIC
Los Angeles, CA -
LAPD has commanded The Douglas, the nearest bar to Dodger Stadium to turn off the televisions. They are now calling unlawful assembly, though as far as I can tell the only signs of anything are people on the sidewalk. It is the 9th inning.

As a govt bureaucrat who does a lot of this data analysis, I DESPISE how much overhead we spend on these programs to check for fraud. I'm pretty convinced that just accepting 10% "waste" is better than trying to prevent it.

We're seeing a massive institutional deportation and state violence apparatus being built and it honestly feels like people dont grasp the sheer scale of it and what already is in place. For every horrific video of masked feds kidnapping people there are so many people pushing paper to help.
NEW: ICE is planning to build a shadow deportation network in Texas. A proposal outlines a 24/7 transport operation run by armed contractors—turning Texas into the logistical backbone of an industrialized deportation machine.

NEW: The Trump admin just ended the practice of automatically extending work permits when people file to renew them — meaning that if USCIS takes too long to process a renewal the applicant loses their authorization to work legally.
The interim final rule applies to renewals filed after tomorrow.
