So stoked to have @so3brocktree.bsky.social join us this week for what was THE most Ministry of Film chats we’ve ever had

History, politics, campy outfits and quotable characters. What’s not to love? 😌
For the avoidance of doubt, the State spending money on children is by far the most cost effective use of public funds to guarantee future prosperity.
The UK, where the day after a decision to take half a million children out of poverty, the media & political world has been full of sneering at those same children & their families, labelling them as ‘Benefits Street’, while the same people are moaning about a tax on £2m mansions. Shameful stuff.

In my view it’s that political journalists sometimes confuse the importance of simple language with the need for simple arguments.
November 28, 2025 at 4:48 PM
Harsh words, but a lot of truth in this, especially around second-guessing oneself and thinking that dumbing an argument down makes it more accessible. How could anyone less smart than us (gasp) understand the full nuance and complexity of politics?!
I say this as someone who is very much anti-intellectual - few politicians in this country did more to make anti-intellectualism central to political communication than Tony Blair

He wasn't anti-intellectual himself, but New Labour was very self-conscious about cultivating a "common touch"

In which I get very excited about the big hams chewing the scenery in tight uniforms (gosh) in one of my favourite films ever - the inimitable Waterloo.

@robinmcghee.bsky.social and @carolinasaludes.bsky.social listen in as @so3brocktree.bsky.social told us about

- Why should we care today about Waterloo?
- Is Napoleon the most impressive military leader in history?
- Was the Duke of Wellington a huge d*ck?

This and so so so much more

Not the first to make this point. But there is a tyrant in charge of another country who is accused of being heavily linked to a paedophile sex ring - and supposed ‘patriots’ in this country are passionately willing him to take down our national broadcaster. Madness.

Okay, I can't let this one go. I live in Ireland, not the UK, but the use of this image by a supposedly socialist party is so stupid and offensive, I'm going to get stuck in.

Let me explain to you why any experienced illustrator/designer could have stopped you making so many miserable mistakes. 1/

Given that no complaints were received at time of broadcast, Gibb is at least as responsible for the current mess, with the BBC threatened with legal action by a foreign head of government, as those who made the programme. How on earth can he stay in post?

Honestly this is such an utterly infuriating and conspiratorial delusion that is only getting worse after a decade.

Yes, Russia likes to play on divides. Yes, people will accept money from Russia in corrupt ways.

But no, that doesn’t mean all of our problems are a Russian plot.
So retro that people are bringing up Russian bots again as a reason why people are bigoted dickheads as opposed to accepting that polls show that at least 30% of people are just always like this and always will be

Politics is not like selling biscuits, where the task is to find out what people like & flog it to them.

It's a moral activity. It's about arguing for the things you believe in. It's about *shaping* the "median voter".

Farage has moved the centre-ground of politics. His opponents can move it back.

Some good news.

London is meeting legal limits for toxic NO2 pollution for the first time – almost 200 years earlier than predicted – following the Mayor’s "world leading air pollution policies," City Hall announces.

The Ultra Low Emissions Zone - and similar policies - really do work.
