Miss Major Griffin-Gracy passed away today according to the House of GG. She was a veteran of the Stonewall rebellion and a lifelong organizer for the safety and dignity of trans people, sex workers, and the incarcerated. The jerk store called. They voted 11-3 to unionize! Everyone welcome Jerks Local 217

This is it. Having unionized my library you'd be surprised (or you wouldn't) by how many librarians opposed unionization and specifically opposed our contractual protections for trans and BIPOC staff. Library workers are just people, and just as bigoted as every other person.
Librarianship is like 90% white and cis women. Many of them are just as bigoted as the rest of the country. Many are very happy about book bans and the shift toward fascism. Many will happily stigmatize and ostracize unhoused, trans, BIPOC, and other vulnerable and marginalized patrons and staff.

I think a clear concrete question people who are worried about the present political trajectory can ask themselves is "how can I support AFSCME and AFGE?"
AFSCME and AFGE, whose members are federal workers, filed a lawsuit today against the Trump administration’s efforts to politicize the civil service. “Together, we are fighting back,” said AFSCME President Lee Saunders. www.afscme.org/blog/afscme-...

I’ll go further. A child in the library is a patron, and, as such, is no one’s property. In my network, when we issue a library card to a kid, we make a point of telling that kid that no one else can use it *or* find out *how* they used it.

We are not parents’ deputies. 📚
A small group of parents should NOT dictate what books other people's children can read.

❤️ Help #UniteAgainstBookBans defend your right to guide your own children's reading. From now — #GivingTuesday, our goal is to get $5 for each unique title targeted for censorship this year: bit.ly/DonateToUABB
