Critiques of the myth of scientific neutrality have been issued for centuries. But, here we are, still training and evaluating scientists as if our neutrality is going to some how make science (and scientists) relevant, trustworthy, and usable. 1/

This also destroy the research and innovation engine that powers our economy, health, national security, national competitiveness, well-being, and overall future. A dangerous and shameful act.
Nature reports that the National Science Foundation has stopped awarding new grants and allotting funds to existing ones. All of them. @colincarlson.bsky.social says that unless the freeze is lifted, it “is going to destroy people's labs.” 2/10

Some reflections from the ground at #COP29- there is a tension between the need for transparency and the need for speed in climate action. The same people are calling for both not recognizing the tension. Here me out on this- fellow professors, think about how long it takes to call on everyone..1/3

#COP29 first update. Standards have been agreed on a UN backed global carbon market. #climatefinance. Proponents say it will help bring lots of additional finance. Others skeptical of issues like credibility and how it was agreed in small group. www.reuters.com/markets/comm...
COP29 countries endorse global carbon market framework
Countries at the two-week COP29 climate summit gave the go-ahead on Monday to carbon credit quality standards which are critical to launching a U.N.-backed global carbon market that would fund projects that reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Yes! People care everywhere. That’s been my experience from the Midwest, to central PA to Virginia and back. We just need to speak to peoples values differently in different places. Everybody wants a clean place to live, fish, hike, you name it.
Old narrative in the US that environmental protection is a leftie-coastal plot will now be re-invigorated. Instead, we know that improving environmental quality matters to all Americans. Let's surface evidence on that from economics and social science.

Good starter thread here. I’m going to be watching for the “who” and the “how is this defined” way more than any top line number negotiated. #cop29 #Baku #finance #climate
COP29 is kicking off and the biggest issue on the agenda is climate finance.

Nearly 200 states must agree on a new goal to help developing nations tackle climate change. They disagree on nearly every issue

Leaving for #COP29 in a couple days and it’s deja vu. I was working @ Dept of State in 2016 (and 2017) under a very different yet very much the same presidential transition. Remembering all the ways my counterparts wondered how international climate action might change.

Since being back in DC, I’ve had a second kid. The biggest difference? None of my friends here (who are all in non-ac careers) understand why I have to work part time when I’m on maternity leave. Now I absolutely love the flexibility we have in these roles but it’s truly a double edged sword.
