"This defiance, of course, had its costs—material, social, + psychic. My father lost his income + his pension; my parents lost friends who shunned them for fear of being implicated in their politics. And then there was the betrayal by those once considered comrades who went over to the other side."
A General Air of Anxiety - Boston Review
The Red Scare targeted my father. He taught me the meaning of resistance.

Got a chance to talk with Alejandro about his beautiful and painful novel of Venezuelan revolution and resistance, Freedom is a Feast. A novel that does not shy away from the most difficult questions about our limits, ethical and otherwise, in seeking freedom podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/b...

@nellstevens ‘s The Original is one of the best novels of the year, and Nell couldn’t be smarter in thinking through literary and historical hoaxes. It’s a must read. (And a must listen). podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/b...

I dare you to read any opening line in the stories collected in @amy_stuber_ ‘s Sad Grownups and not be consumed. They are jarring, funny, dark, and most of all human to the core. A righteous collection that will demand your attention. podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/b... @newbooksnetwork.bsky.social

@jessebrownerauthor ‘s Sing to Me lives in the world of Greek epics but speaks and sings directly to our moment. Hani, an eleven year old on a journey to Troy to find his sister is wiser about the costs and weight of war than any of the leaders currently waging it. Lyrical, hopeful, unforgettable.

@kate__folk ‘s SkyDaddy will be the funniest, most unhinged novel you read all summer. It is also a powerful indictment of a culture of loneliness and conformity. And, yes, it’s horny for airplanes. @randomhousekids.bsky.social @newbooksnetwork.bsky.social podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/k...

A novel that predicted our moment of prison camps and the broad elimination of human rights based on fear and lies. @knuyen.bsky.social ‘s My Documents should be required reading, as painful as it is to invite a history of detention camps back into the present. podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/k...

Rob Franklin’s Great Black Hope dazzles with the prose of poet-novelist, tracing the ongoing effects of America’s greatest sin on black families of great wealth and culture capital.A story of how a small misstep can reveal the fragility of black life in the U.S. in spaces of supposed privilege.

What a privilege to be in conversation with Colum McCann about his latest gift of a novel, Twist. I can’t recommend it enough. It is about cables deep in the dark of the ocean, but it’s about everything, and told in a poet’s voice.Get it. @randomhouse.bsky.social podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/c...

A big book with a big impact. @adamrosswriter has written a showstopper about a child actor, a wrestler, and a middle schooler who has an affair with a woman 20yrs older than him, and they are all the same unforgettable character. Playworld is a magic novel of an earlier New York City.

Maria.zoccola’s gorgeous reimagining of the story of Helen of Troy, transported to Sparta Tennessee, dazzles on the level of the line, while working a narrative thread that will tangle up what you thought you knew about the Iliad. Have a listen to our episode and hear Maria read. #poetry
