Covid infection levels in England seem to have remained at historically lower levels over the last week. Reported influenza (flu) levels have also remained at high levels in the last week. These are tentative conclusions, as the data may be incomplete.

This is BuDS’ 256th Covid risk assessment since the beginning of the pandemic, and we are still the only organisation publishing free risk data for disabled and clinically vulnerable people. We will update you on the situation again next week.

The risk mitigations (things you can do to protect yourself) include wearing a PPE respiratory mask indoors, improving fresh air ventilation, using a HEPA filter, and avoiding higher-risk areas. (4/4)
January 7, 2026 at 6:38 PM
We recognise the uncertain risk posed by incomplete data. However, the precautions which we recommend remain appropriate and proportionate for even the highest likely level of risk. (3/4)
January 7, 2026 at 6:38 PM
We continue to not recommend precautions outdoors, unless you are in a dense crowd of people. Check out the table on our website or Substack for full details. (2/4)

In accordance with the precautionary principle, we continue to recommend that precautions should be taken in all high, medium-high, & medium risk indoor places. In lower risk indoor places, most people (who are not acutely CV to Covid and/or flu) should consider if precautions can be relaxed. (1/4)
January 7, 2026 at 6:38 PM
Reported influenza (flu) levels have remained static over the last week. The steep fall that began in mid-December has not continued, but neither have flu levels increased again. Flu levels therefore remain objectively high, and precautions against catching flu remain necessary.
January 7, 2026 at 6:38 PM
Given all the circumstances, we are not reducing our risk level from Moderately High, meaning a prevalence greater than 1 in 500. We will report back next week, when hopefully there will be greater clarity. (3/3)
January 7, 2026 at 6:38 PM
Two weeks ago, however, the raw NOIDS data (which may be incomplete) suggested a significant drop in Covid infection levels, which was counter-intuitive. Raw NOIDS data from last week suggests a small increase in Covid infection levels in England, which is more what we would expect to see. (2/3)
January 7, 2026 at 6:38 PM
During early December, we saw the rapid rise of a new Covid variant, designated by the WHO as B.A.3.2. (or ‘Cicada’), in England. Cicada has not have gone away, and we still expect Covid infection levels generally to increase. (1/3)

We are not aware of any official calculations. Obviously, we can very approximately calculate this total using our prevalence data.

That's reassuring, thank you. We don't like being blocked for no reason.

We've been told that we have been wrongly added to a block list by @blockthislist.bsky.social. Please remove us from this list. Thank you
