The exaggerated features of the figure shown in this excerpt — bulging eyes, sharp teeth, clawed limbs — and especially the fiery crown, mark it as an embodiment of dangerous inner forces. Its grotesque, animated posture suggests aggression and disruption, typical of depictions of Māra’s army attempting to obstruct the Buddha’s path to awakening. The flaming motif is deeply symbolic in Buddhist thought, especially in the context of taṇhā (Pāli; Sanskrit: tṛṣṇā), or “craving” — a central cause of suffering in the Four Noble Truths.

The fragment belonged to an elegant seated Buddha figure whose right hand was probably pointing downwards in a gesture of touching the earth. The surface shows the jade-green patina typical of bronzes from northern Thailand. Siddhartha Gautama, stylized as the Buddha, is the most common motif in Buddhist art. Buddhism is a religion and philosophy that originated in ancient India and has since spread throughout Asia and beyond. This post is the first in a series of articles exploring the history and philosophy of Buddhism. The image was taken at the Rautenstrauch-Joest Museum in 2025.

Dainichi Nyorai, also known as the Great Sun Buddha or Mahavairocana, is the central deity of Shingon Buddhism and East Asian Esoteric Buddhism. He is considered the supreme, primordial Buddha from whom the universe emanates, embodying wisdom, light, and the union of the spiritual and material realms. Dainichi is often depicted with the "wisdom fist" mudra, where the left index finger is clasped by the right hand, symbolizing the harmony of these two realms.

Fudō Myō-ō, also known as Acala in Sanskrit, is a central figure in Japanese Buddhism, representing immovable wisdom and protection against evil. For sale here is a very large antique circa 1900 to early 20th century cast bronze seated Buddha Shakyamuni statue from Thailand. The statue is of the seated Buddha Shakyamuni with his right hand forming the Karana mudra which is to ward off evil or negativity. His left hand is flat with palm facing upwards which is characteristic of the Buddha Shakyamuni. The stylized features of the face and the general proportions are characteristic of the art of Sukhothai, a school of sculpture that developed around the Thai capital between the 13th and 15th centuries. This statue is from my personal collection, and unfortunately due to space constraints I must part with it now. I have owned it for many years, and originally purchased it from a wealthy estate in the Palm Springs area in the late 1970s to early 1980s. I was told at the time that the previous owner had owned it for many years before that, and that it was originally purchased in Southeast Asia around the 1910s to 20s. It is cast bronze, and turning it on its side you can see the residue of the casting process inside and glimmers of the bronze underneath. It stands 22" tall by 17" wide by 12" deep at the base. It weighs about 50 pounds prior to packing, and will be quite expensive to ship. There are no markings on the statue that I can see. One very similar sold at Christies in London a few years back for around 12K pounds. It is in great shape with some wear at bottom but otherwise flawless!

The protector deity Begtse Chen, also known as Chamsing (English: the Great Coat of Mail. Sanskrit name: Prana Atma). Colloquially Begtse is known as red Mahakala and ranks relatively high in the Sakya protector pantheon of Wisdom Deities. The protector was later adopted and incorporated into the Gelug School of Tsongkapa and subsequently became popular in Mongolia - predominantly following the Gelug tradition since the 17th century. There are a few Gelug traditions and regional monastic centers that hold Begtse to be a worldly protector deity. The majority of the art objects in the gallery below were created within a Gelug context and many of them are of Mongolian origin.
