If I asked you to picture the Zambezi River, I'm sure this wouldn't be what comes to mind! More often captured where it's vast and powerful, I was lucky enough to visit the quiet source of Africa's fourth-longest river on fieldwork in Zambia in 2022.

Absolutely delighted to share that I submitted my DPhil thesis last week after 3.5 years delving into the world of biodiversity data. Thank you to everyone who helped me get to this point. Next stop, a postdoc modelling the evolution of Amazonian biodiversity at the Open University! I can’t wait.

One of the best parts of my PhD was my research stay in Joaquín's group in Madrid, and I'm delighted that the fruits of our labour has now been officially published!
A great paper by @bryonyblades.bsky.social shows that mobilising data from recent surveys by taxonomists and other specialists complements the spatial and climatic coverage and reduces bias in data on insect distributions from @gbif.org. @cristinaronquillo.bsky.social @mncn-bgcg.bsky.social 🌐🧪

New pre-print alert for my first post! With wonderful collaborators from the MNCN Department of Biogeography & Global Change in Madrid, we found that increased mobilisation of natural history collections can still improve quality and coverage of insect biodiversity data doi.org/10.1101/2024...
Mobilisation of data from natural history collections can increase the quality and coverage of biodiversity information
Aim Quantify potential gains to insect data on the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) through further digitisation of natural history collections, assess to what degree this would fill bi...
