Hi All

Less than 24 hours in and I’m enjoying the idea of reestablishing an active #PLN sharing the challenges, joys and wonders of education.

I’ve started curating a list of Australian educators. If you or someone you know should be added, tag them below.

If we took play as seriously as productivity, society would be much richer! Play feels like an indulgence for adults in Western society, but it shouldn't. Teachers especially feel this pressure. We'd see more innovation, well-being, and joy. #EduSkyAU
Thanks for all your insights! Here’s the final question…
Question 6: What would happen if we took play as seriously as we take productivity?

"Innovation is often about working out which rules are helping and which are getting in the way" #EduSkyAU
A4 #EduSkyAU

I think a key point of play, is that there needs to be some rules. When people are playing with different rules, the games are rarely fun.

I think Innovation is often about working out which rules are helping and which are getting in the way.
OK let's explore some of the possibilities of play...
Question 4: How might playful mindsets unlock innovation and collaboration in education?

If play were a design principle: no A-E grades, strong skill focus, flexible timetable, more PBL/CBL. Assessment would be mostly formative, students show learning, highly individualised, and much more autonomous.

Learning would truly thrive! #EduSkyAU
Keep the thinking coming...
Here is Question 5: If play were a design principle in schools, what would change?

"High challenge, low threat". This is the space to play in! #EduSkyAU
A3 #EduSkyAU

Play can promote engagement, but I think we lose more... Risk Taking, Thinking Skills, Resilience, Communication.

It feels like the idea of "High Challenge with Low Threat" can be explored when we use "Play"
What a great conversation! I could talk about play for hours. Let's turn our focus to play in education. I would love to hear your perspectives on this one…
Question 3: What is lost when we minimise opportunities for play in education?

"Play invites risk, humour, rebellion, delight" #EduSkyAU
A4. Play invites risk, humour, rebellion, delight. These are the raw materials of innovation. A playful mindset doesn’t mean silly. It means serious about exploring the unknown without fear of failure. That’s where collaboration truly catches fire. #EduSkyAU

This! Play as a tool for connection! #EduSkyAU
I love this. Play is so wonderful for connecting us as humans. There are (generally) no risks in play- everyone can show up as they are. #EduSkyAU

Playful mindsets ignite creativity! In freedom, "what if" questions spark innovation. Applying a "yes, and" attitude in groups fosters true collaboration, building on ideas rather than shutting them down. It's a powerful shift! #EduSkyAU

When we lose wonder, we lose a love of learning, too!

In my role, we do field trips with students. Last week we went out to Shark Bay. The amount of questions that happen when students have wonder...as my boss Suzy would say that is #therealclassroom.

#EduSkyAU
A3. When we minimise play, we don’t just lose engagement—we amputate wonder. We teach young people that life is a performance, not a process. We risk cultivating perfectionists instead of problem-solvers. Cogs instead of creators. #EduSkyAU

When play is minimised, we lose the love & autonomy of learning. As one student put it last week, "school is like a jail." Learning should be joyful, not a confinement! This stifles natural curiosity & deep engagement. #EduSkyAU

This! "Like breathing with half a lung" #EduSkyAU
A2. Deep learning without play is like trying to breathe with half a lung. You might survive, but you won’t thrive. Play is the rehearsal room of creativity—it’s how we prototype understanding. Strip it away, and we flatten curiosity into compliance. #EduSkyAU
June 3, 2025 at 9:51 AM
A2: Tough question! I believe deep learning can happen without play, but play offers unique, unexpected learning opportunities. For teens/adults, I picture play as unrestricted time to experiment & learn, fostering deeper engagement & novel insights. #EduSkyAU
Keep the responses coming!
Here is Question 2: Can deep learning happen without play? Why or why not?

I play quite often! It can feel awkward to embrace play as an adult, but once you let go of that initial hesitation, there's a real sense of freedom. You truly discover new facets of yourself and unlock unexpected creativity. It's a powerful experience!
#EduSkyAU
Ok let's have some fun!
Here is Question 1: When was the last time you played as an adult? What did it feel like?

Federal Government could very simply and relatively cheaply assist parents and students by delivering school lunches. It’s nation and future building by ensuring nutrition equity.

What is also often unspoken is what Government can do to help secure time for parents.

Allowing educators to try and fail lightly!

#EduSkyAU
Having just come from a week of intensive work with school leaders in South Australia, this next question is very present in my mind: Q4. What unique role do school leaders play in turning future-focused ideas into action? #EduSkyAU
May 27, 2025 at 10:20 AM
This! All this!

#EduSkyAU
A2. For an innovation culture to truly take root, it has to feel safe to experiment and fail without negative consequence. Governments could examine how they might be making it unsafe for schools & educators to fail, and consider how they can encourage safe-to-fail experiments and learning #EduSkyAU

Play is fun! So we miss the love of learning. So much incidental learning happens through play.

And we all like to play! Or at least we used to.

#EduSkyAU
Ok, so I could stay on Q2 all night, but here's a third one that really is just as important: Q3. What role should evidence play in shaping education futures? #EduSkyAU
May 27, 2025 at 10:01 AM
This!

How might governments become enablers of change?

#EduSkyAU
And for me, there is a greater need to actually reframe the role of the state: rather than being the sole author of reform, governments can act as stewards and enablers—creating conditions that support local experimentation and shared learning. #EduSkyAU
And you've probably all heard me say this before, but we need to shift focus from ‘what works’ to ‘what might work here’: Innovation needs to be context-sensitive. The best ideas often emerge from within schools and systems that are trusted to take risks and experiment and reflect #EduSkyAU

1. Provide equitable funding.

2. Use their influence to bring like-minded people to collaborate.

3. Support initiatives suggested.

4. Bipartisan long-term support.

5. Help provide systemic change for other deep-rooted problems.

#EduSkyAU
Alrighty... this second one very close to my heart: Q2. How can governments better promote innovation in education, without imposing it from above?
May 27, 2025 at 9:55 AM
For me, we must first ask the question, what is the purpose of the school of the future? For me, there must be an emphasis on intra & entrepreneurial skills. Schools must lean into student strengths. Schools must be personalised. Learning should be hands-on, connected and authentic. #EduSkyAU
Hey folks! I'm looking forward to this chat. Let's get the ball rolling... Q1 today is: "If we start from today’s emerging realities, what kind of future schools must we design?" #EduSkyAU
