A friend who teaches theology shared with me a post about CS Lewis's Mere Christianity, which discusses foundational Christian logic across denominations. It reminded me of Dale's tweet below, and I wanted to share some thoughts here regarding modesty and respectability, which are often hot topics.

Trump's superpower is getting people to stick their necks out for him only to get humiliated and yet there are always more people thinking "This won't happen to me. I'm built different" and it always does.

I'm not on the same page on this. I thought it was very obvious trolling.
If Biden said "I should be Pope" we'd have a 6 month deep dive into his dementia by the WaPo and 15 new Op-Eds in the NYT; they'd cover it wall to wall in every section of every paper for months and months and he would probably be impeached by the Waymo Democrats

Excuse me, Mr Stipe? Yes, hi; I don't mean to complain, but I was given to understand I'd feel rather differently about crucial events such as these…

1/ Jon makes the mistake of believing that the First Amendment issues with KOSA have been resolved, leaving no principled reason for opposing it.

But that's just not true. KOSA remains a free speech nightmare, and presuming anyone opposing it must have a financial incentive is deeply disingenuous.

A person I respect, one that usually understands systems of people, described—in a recent newsletter—Zuckerberg’s letter to Congress from August as “growing a spine.”

I think about that a lot.

As a category we might be just smart enough to fall for fascism’s lies but not smart enough to notice.

This thread-within-a-thread is a <chef's kiss> perfect encapsulation of what's happened to student preparedness over the past ~decade. Nearly every professor I talk to about this tells some version of the same story.
One challenge here is an expectation that there is a specific skill deficiency when there is a cluster of deficiencies, overlapping, intersecting, and reinforcing each other. Pre-Covid, I noticed deficiencies in identifying key arguments, so I created a handout and devoted time to teaching that.

To lose one Speaker may regarded as a misfortune. To lose four looks like carelessness.
