Anyway, for me, the vision is something like this: America should be a society that works to fulfill the promise of democracy — we should have the agency to live at our own direction. Not as victims of circumstance or under the thumb of the wealthy and powerful. Our lives are our own.

say it again:

4 million people work in higher ed, the largest employer in 10 states, second largest employer in 10 more, and in 60 of the 100 biggest cities

ROI for NIH and NSF for local economies is conservatively 4x, often close to 10x

demolishing higher education is economic sabotage
There is a false dichotomy drawn between "the ivory tower" and "the real world," and I'm here to report that in a post-industrial society, your real-world economy absolutely hinges on the university.

University towns are factory towns. Universities drive economic activity, not the other way around.

This was one of my most useful experiences in grad school, and I really encourage folks in the dissertation stage to apply. Thanks to @audreycomstock7.bsky.social and Heather Smith-Cannoy for running an incredible one in summer 2021!

1/n as someone who loves democracy & loves my country, it’s hard to grapple w the fact that an anti-democratic candidate won a national popular election. one thing keeping me equal parts hopeful & frustrated is that there are more people in the US who do not support trump than people who do.

Being snatched off the street for your opinions. I'll say it again. We are deciding, right now, whether the aspirations we hold for this country are finished. Whether we're going to let these hoodlums and grifters throw what's left of the American idea into the garbage for their own profit and gain.
