Fundamentally we were not educated properly about the Nazis. I continue to believe this is the main problem. Our entire understanding of how fascism can descend on a nation is based on a caricature. The secret sauce of Nazism wasn’t just the evil people. It was the non-evil people who went along.
I think most people severely underestimated how much fascism and kleptocracy would triumph through the surrender and default of forces that should have opposed it.
