People are complaining about the environmental effects while I'm only interested in the new field of numerical analysis that AI supercomputing implies.

Libraries have faced unprecedented attacks this year. Despite these challenges, the Internet Archive is more committed than ever to fighting for access to public information for all those who seek it.

extremely patronizing to have men say "clever girl" about me achieving my PhD

I wrote a thread earlier about Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey and changed my mind about posting it, but it seems I just influenced your algorithm instead. (This has happened a few times.)
dark forest theory strikes again
IR realism is dumb as rocks and I understand that this is basically just xenopolitical IR realism but we really really really don't want extraterrestrials to find us.

If ET tries phoning home, we put him in gitmo at bare minimum.

I've been speculating on the direction of physics:
Statistics: Chaos theory -> Probability
Cryptography: Computation -> Complexity
Proof theory: Univalency ? -> Homotopy type theory

The last paradigm hints contradiction drives reality. Paraconsistent logic may offer the right clues to continue.

What is the future of the First Amendment with deepfakes? Deepfakes may prove too invasive for people and they might be criminalized. At the very least, I think the software should remain free. We need to resist attempts by politicians to expand the category of malware.

Silicon Valley cartels are colluding with each other to protect their ad revenue streams. FOSS has failed to offer alternatives to the corporate internet to protect anonymity and privacy, but sooner or later cybersecurity specialists will not be only ones that will have had enough of data 'anarchy'.

(Repost) How to Spot National Security: keywords like “unmoderated”, focus on one platform such as Telegram, that happens to be foreign, tied to our Discord, purportedly a radicalization space but rather a blind spot to the surveillance agencies. Killing two birds with one stone!

The Chinese balloon was fake. The defense lobby finds every opportunity to profit and Congress each opening to expand policing. If they ram through an installation of anti-drone countermeasures and radar, the American people should expect the protection of weaponized drones in the law.

AI won’t pose a danger beyond the level of fraud, surveillance, and hacking assistants until significant theoretical advances or integration with militaries.

It's not impossible but frustrating that I need to expend additional effort to find direct sources online nowadays. In any case, here is the speech by Yoon announcing martial law if anyone is interested:

What I like about Bsky so far:
- smart people
- engagement
- information is not suppressed, unlike Google, X, etc.
- intriguers do not appear to be manipulating my feed
- decentralized and middleware
- less newspeak

Canada and Australia, and some of their allies, are displeased with West Africans trading metal on independent terms.
The idea that Russian mercenaries have got $2.5bn in gold from West Africa is based on some extremely questionable assumptions, as I've argued previously:

American capitalism is turning into meme at this point like empty shelves at a retailer in 90s Russia. The US president should visit Pyaterochka and deliver some remarks about BellaBots and other charms like Yeltsin.

As a teenager, I certainly would have been tempted to throw a Molotov at the nearest government building for this paternalism. This is not about protecting children, which is the parent's responsibility, but banishing youth from their right to assembly.
Breaking News: Australia has passed a sweeping ban on social media for children under 16, one of the world’s most comprehensive measures aimed at safeguarding young people from potential hazards online. nyti.ms/3VbiGzc

The law sets a minimum age for users of platforms like TikTok, Instagram and X. How the restriction will be enforced online remains an open question.

RFK grew up in a time with actual racism and remembers it.
Trump HHS nominee RFK Jr.:

If you give Black children “resilience” then “the inevitable racism” will “bounce off” them like they are “the Avengers” because “they will be immune to it” and “then we don’t have to stop racism altogether, because we’re never going to be able to do that.”

They were "bourgeois socialists", a category Marx recognizes in his manifesto. National Socialism was predictable for Germany, beginning with Bismarck's national-social politics, as a reaction to revolution.

Securing freedom in the 21st century necessitates sociotechnological innovation, a reinvigorated movement for FOSS and middleware. AI and intrusions into personal data are a repeat of company towns like Pullman in the 19th century: readily appropriable tools for corporate-state repression.
