Pastimes include interstellar lightsails, nano photonics, THz, radiative cooling, teaching physics, and unnecessarily elaborate cooking. All opinions are my own and not the university's.
Congratulations to my PhD student Jadon Lin for this review paper on lightsails. I hope it will get many more people into this fascinating field. A lot more research needed before we achieve interstellar travel, but the more of us work on it, the sooner it'll happen!

Lightsails for Interstellar Travel: Photonics for Propulsion, Thermal Management and Stability
Lightsails are a highly promising spacecraft concept that has attracted interest in recent years due to its potential to travel at near-relativistic speeds. Such speeds, which current conventional cra...

"Lightsails could reach other stars, but keeping them in the laser beam is tricky—oscillations can knock them off course. We've shown that by tailoring how light refracts on the sail, relativistic effects can dampen these oscillations by >95%. Congrats Jadon Lin! #physics ⚛️

Congratulations to Liam Van Ravenstein on his first conference presentation at #AIP2024 congress - great talk on Rotational relativistic damping and linear stability analysis of lightsails in front of a packed room, culmination of an outstanding honours project. #physics
