Good piece by @polphilpod.bsky.social at @theunpopulist.net. I think there is something to be said for distinguishing fascism proper from merely illiberal right-populism. And there's no plausible narrow and precise definition of "fascist" that Musk doesn't very obviously meet.

More importantly: we should not cede in the first place that this is in any way a serious academic dispute, when the student's mother is a J6 lawyer and the submitted assignment constitutes direct, gendered harassment of the instructor. This is not a "rubric" problem, this is an attack on trans folk
Counterpoint: a college junior should be expected to internalize basic formal and intellectual expectations w/o the instructor's explicit direction. Nobody should have to include in the rubric "assignment was submitted without diarrhea splattered all over it," "assignment is free of race-hate," etc.
If an instructor wants to impose content based instructions to focus essays on science, then they should. But my read is that this is busy work intended to make sure assignments are read and thought about and little more. So, the prompt was open ended and sloppy and invited this. 🤷♂️
