Having grown up in Scotland and moved to the US, I’ve realised the differences in how cute comedy industry works back home. Basically, it’s easier to have a career as a comedian without having to “make it big” with a huge headlining show, because TV panel shows are a stable source of paid work.
I do think I've observed in basically all creative fields that celebrity is dangerous, because really good craft takes time, and you just can't do it if you're doing nonstop interviews and articles and things. Like a lot of authors' second or third works feel generic/under-researched.
Put another way: at some point comedians go from laugh lines to applause lines. Problem is applause lines are easy and boring. Laugh lines are very hard. To my mind an ideal life as a writer or researcher is you do that sort of hard when you're young and a different (sustained) sort of hard later.

My version of this was arguing with my secondary school history teacher during our viking unit that the World Serpent was named Jormungandr, not “Midgard”, as the class workbook incorrectly stated. I’d been reading mythology books my entire childhood.
one of the most shocking things i remember from middle school is having to argue to a teacher that we did in fact have photography in the civil war, and that our textbooks were not showing pencil sketches. i was right of course, even proved it with sources, and got written up for it lmao

This weekend was the first festival without our dear friend Piotr, who passed away in July.
