It sounds like the tech CEOs have more sway here than the immigration hardliners (Miller/Vance). Or maybe he's just a sucker for something he can charge a price for ($100k H1B fee)

I was curious about whether this might end up as an implied directive to governors to use their own pardon power on the state-level convictions, but it looks like it can't/won't happen...
- AZ has a D governor (Hobbs)
- GA has a R governor, but the governor doesn't have pardon power

2024 analysis is complicated, but I agree looking forward
Autocracy doesn't need broad support to survive if it can de-mobilize and de-motivate opposition. In 2026 + 2028 voters need to have faith that dems will fight for them. "Both parties suck" and cynicism will be easier for the GOP to exploit

I’m already seeing people insist that even with this capitulation the Democrats will still sweep 2026 because Trump is that bad. It was precisely that attitude that gave us 2024.

Sanders: That is a totally meaningless gesture. You can get 100 votes here and it won't mean anything because the House is not going to take it up.

No?? IMO they're even more vulnerable
1) Trump/Vought are already flouting the law on RIFs
2) Now the GOP will see RIFs as bargaining chip, not as a political liability
Terminal lack of self-preservation by some of these dems

I know the senate whip is not that strong, but it seems wild that there are 8 dem votes *and* leadership is a no *and* the politics have been playing very well for dems in the past week (GOP in hot water; big sweeps for dems in elections)

My prior here is the admin needs to mitigate any tech stock downturn out of political necessity (asset-based economy ftw). So they're getting the worst of both worlds...

Interesting poll from YouGov: more impacted by shutdown = more blame tilted GOP
I can see this creating havoc in the GOP between "materially affected by Trump's policies" vs. "politics is just a game", esp. since power holders are more likely to be the latter

I think we're fortunate that DOT is at least reducing traffic and not playing hardball with the controllers ala Reagan in 1981.
