I also think a good amount of academics get a sense of self-worth through being "right," so they misunderstand how much other people care about it. This happens with any kind of psychological struggle, like anxious people just not getting why you aren't also worried all the time.
People care for more about being seen — feeling seen, in the case of sharing a fake but funny video or bit that generates affect — than being accurate or “right”. We misapply our nerd obsession with enlightenment values of truth onto people who just want to boogie.

University leadership all across the country never face accountability. They can do amateur hour shit like this, at an institution full of specialists, and face no consequences. We need unionization and true democratic leadership at universities before everything goes off a cliff.

"Demeaning" trans people is exactly right. Their goal--and what they're most able to easily achieve--is our humiliation. The imposition of indignities. They also hope that, as humiliations often do, it exposes us to ridicule. Perhaps even violence. (e.g. forcibly outing people on their IDs).
It's really frustrating that a lot of the media just sort of frames the Trump admin as "wading into a hot debate over trans issues that have roiled american politics" when it's like, clear that they are motivated by a desire to demean trans people
