41, autistic enby. Self diagnosis is valid, vaccines don't cause autism. My autism defines me. Yes it does. Pronouns are they/them or she/her.

I don't know if this is a forma diagnosis thing, or if it is a "the world knows I"m autistic now" thing, but I feel like there's been a lot of prejudice because of it.

I've had to deal with teachers who don't want me in their classroom because I'm autistic.

If you have a formal diagnosis, has it had any unexpected consequences? Are any negative?
If you DON’T have a formal diagnosis, do you worry about any potential negative consequences? #AutChat

I think my formal autism diagnosis helped me the most in public school.

At that point in time, my parents were able to advocate for me thanks to a lot of legal protections in place so I had reasonable accommodations I really couldn't live without.

Q2: If you have a formal diagnosis, has it helped you? How?

If you don’t have a formal diagnosis, are there pros for you of not having one? #AutChat

I have a formal autism diagnosis that I received when I was roughly 7 years old. It did not come as a surprise.

I didn't suspect I had ADHD until I started seeing a bunch of ADHD life hacks on twitter, and by the time I got my diagnosis, it also did not come as a surprise.

Q1: Do you have a formal diagnosis? If so, what led you to get one? (Or was it a surprise?)

If you don’t have a formal diagnosis, have you considered getting one? Why or why not? #AutChat

We used to post Wakelet transcripts of our weekly Twitter chats to autchat.com. We also linked to them on the #AutChat tag and on Facebook.

However, at this point in our transition to BlueSky, we don’t know how to integrate Wakelet/similar. For the time being, we do not make transcripts.

#AutChat is a tag for autistic people & "autistic cousins" (people with similar experiences due to hydrocephalus, cerebral palsy, ADHD, etc).

We welcome autistic/similar people whether formally diagnosed, self-diagnosed, or questioning/wondering if they are autistic/similar.

I feel like my success relied heavily on having a quiet space to do my homework.

And my home wasn't a quiet place for study, because there were a lot of loud electronic devices like desktop computers and TVs.

The computer was in the TV room.

Q4: What autism/neurodivergence-related difficulties do you (or did you) encounter outside of classes, relevant to being a student? #AutChat
October 26, 2025 at 9:04 PM
Honestly, keeping up with notes was the biggest thing.

College was usually easier because most of the time, all the homework was listed in a syllabus, so I could follow that more easily.

But in high school, that was all verbally assigned after the bell rang.

I don't know where this fits in with questions, but it would have been really helpful if instructors noticed me when I raised my hand.

The only time anyone ever saw me was when the person next to me would raise their hand and tell the instructor I had a question.

I was invisible.

In high school, I had unlimited time on exams and I was allowed to turn homework in late with no penalty.

Maybe a note-taker would have been helpful too?

Though having a laptop in class for note-taking turned out to be best for me.

#AutChat A2
Q2: What supports or accommodations would help but are not or were not available to you? #AutChat
October 26, 2025 at 8:45 PM
I had none.

I was told that if I wanted to have accommodations in community college, all my credits would be non-transferrable.

I would have had to retake 2-3 years of coursework.

I was forced to say no.

#AutChat A1
Q1: What supports or accommodations have you used, if any?

Have they been helpful? #AutChat

I just started playing Mario Picross again, and it's an interesting experience now.

I feel like I have a bit more mental bandwidth than I had before, so I'm able to play it a lot more confidently.

And the one thing I find myself more able to do now?

Make guesses.

I'd say... if something can be done remotely, I'd like to be allowed to do so.

For in-person work, I want to have as much physical control over my workspace as possible.

#AutChat A2
Q2: Are there accommodations you would like to ask for, if you could? (dream big) #AutChat
October 19, 2025 at 8:45 PM
Yes, but generally speaking, I'm more accustomed to someone advocating for my accommodations on my behalf.

I'm really not very good at advocating by myself for my own accommodations.

(How many times is my computer going to tell me that I've misspelled the word 'accommodations'?)

Q1: Have you asked for and gotten accommodations before? What were they for? Were they helpful? #AutChat
