I am in favor of this and it's something that gets rabid pushback online. Most of these complaints are about unrelated exploitative hiring stuff, and I think "do the actual job for a bit" is the most useful and most fair question an interview can ask.

i've never understood why interviews in general aren't just "show me you doing the thing i want to pay you for" in industries where applicants are expected to come in already possessing all the skills anyway.

Maybe the console they own puts up an invisible wall that blocks them from walking 7 meters to the store that sells lesser-known indie games.
(Console makers have final authority to deny a port from PC, and I've read smaller studios get denied more often.)

One way consumers create this issue is by buying a PlayStation instead of a living room PC, or buying a Nintendo Switch instead of a handheld PC. This means they can't buy indie games whose devs don't yet have enough of a portfolio to qualify for a console devkit.

Or even worse, how entire genres have been relegated to Indie production level or AA cause no AAA dev wants to put any hope on strategy, sims or management. And I mean, it's great for the indies, but I still wish we could have a city sim with the pomp and fanfare of the old Maxis games.
