YA horror author inspired by RL Stine, Christopher Pike, and too many horror movies to name. I aim to be the monster under your bed. 💀🤘🏻
Hello! 👋🏻 My name is Donna Taylor, and I write YA horror! Mostly inspired by 80s and 90s horror. 😁 The one WIP I have is for book4 in my San Nico Slayers series. Book 1, Blood on the Boardwalk, comes out 9/25 and is inspired by The Lost Boys! 🎠 #horrorwriterschat
Alright let's kick things off for another night. If you're not a horror writer, feel free to mute me for this evening, I will not be offended!
#HorrorWritersChat people, assemble! I want to hear your thoughts.

No story NEEDS a moral or thematic lesson baked into it. Those stories tend to feel preachy and even scolding depending on how it’s told. I never write with a specific moral or theme in mind. That doesn’t mean one won’t develop, but my goal is to tell a story. Not lecture people. #horrorwriterschat
Question TWO. Now I feel like one of those quiz folkies. I expect to get a range of answers to this, but hey who knows. It's not that much of a corker. I'm not super mean today. Mwahaha.

I generally don’t develop a story/plot/characters much beyond the page unless it’s relevant. It just depends on what the story requires.

Question Three!

I suspect this MIGHT align with the pantsers plotters but hey who knows. Maybe it won't.

This looks so fun! 😍🩸

Inspired by The Lost Boys and 90s teen horror novels, Blood on the Boardwalk is a modern day horror comedy perfect for those looking to dip their toe into horror, as well as the dopamine hit of nostalgic horror easter eggs for older fans 🩸

Ooooo that’s a hard one. As much as I love the old New England vibes of Salem, I’m just a hair more drawn to the beach carnival world of San Nico (fictional) from my San Nico Slayers series. I’m just such a complete sucker for carnival vibes. #HorrorWritersChat
#HorrorWritersChat question 4 (last question but stick around in ten minutes for the outro):

You can only use one setting in all your horror works going forward. What/where would this place be?

If I want to set something in a real place I haven’t been, I find the immersion difficult. I’m a very visceral writer. Vibes are a thing for me and I like getting them right. So I tend to go down rabbit holes trying to make sure I’m getting more than tourist vibes of a place. #HorrorWritersChat
#HorrorWritersChat question 3:

Are there any unique challenges for you when setting your horror work in a real place?

I don’t have a preference. I tend to get hitched up in someone uses a real place that I’m familiar with and gets it wrong, but that doesn’t deter me from reading real place works. As long as the place is developed and visceral, I’m all for it. #HorrorWritersChat
#HorrorWritersChat question 2:

Do you tend to prefer real places, fictional, or a mix of both?

I love this! My name is Donna Taylor, and I write primarily YA horror. My current WIP is book 4 in my San Nico Slayers series, about a girl who has to stop a vamp from ☠️ her, and opens a whole new can of worms doing it. Book 1, Blood on the Boardwalk, comes out later this year. #HorrorWritersChat
#HorrorWritersChat question 1:

Introduce yourself: Who are you, what do you write and tell us about your current WIP

My one “resolution” for the year is watching the stuff I have on my streaming watchlists. I finished The Gentlemen (loved), and watched Greta Gerwig’s Little Women before it left Hulu (also loved). Now I’m finishing Buffy. I never watched past S3 originally and I’m into S6 now. Good news replacement

So I’m making my way through Buffy (stopped watching after season 3 originally), and I’m at the musical episode. I…kind of hate it. Like, the idea is great. Quirky take on choreomania. But the sheer amount of musical numbers to plot is like smashing three musicals into a single run. It’s A LOT.

You will do readings where no one shows up. You will set up at events and sell no books. Rejection will show up in your inbox again and again. You will say “I wrote a book!” and folks will stay quiet or say “Cool!” and then not buy it. It’s all good. Part of the gig. KEEP AT IT.
