For a party that likes to talk about removing “gatekeepers,” Conservatives today seem to have a lot of opinions about who is or isn’t Canadian enough to opine on the election.

It’s a “Carnavan.”
If ever anyone was wondering why Mark Carney was mysteriously visiting Rideau Hall today, I may have found the reason idling in downtown Ottawa #election

Hot take:

A reporter can press a Prime Minister hard for an answer, question the sincerity of his answer, and the PM can push back on the reporter in his response, without anyone involved having done anything wrong.

My latest for the Toronto Star talks about the importance of narratives, and why if Poilievre loses the next election it will because the election narrative changed, not because the Liberal leader did.

Pierre Poilievre has a bigger problem than Mark Carney. Much bigger
In a political crisis, it’s possible to play the victim — it might even help with your public image — but nobody votes for the victim in a crisis.

Conservatives are attacking Mark Carney’s record as Governor of the Bank of England.

Here’s the part they keep leaving out.

The UK voted to leave the EU in the middle of his term.

Carney repeatedly warned that voting for Brexit would have a negative impact on the economy.

He was right.

Canada, I think we are setting our sights too low.

Instead of asking the U.S to drop tariffs in exchange for dropping ours, we ask for Trump’s resignation.

Americans want to sell a drop off bourbon up here, get potash from Saskatchewan, or build a car together again?

No problem, tell him to quit.

Winner take all game, in Boston, and the visiting team with Maple Leafs on the jerseys wins it.

Anything is possible kids.

I’ve heard you boo the Leafs way louder than that.

If the economic explanations, impacts and analysis aren’t clear to you, there’s a simpler framing to consider.

There are two sides to this dispute, and one them is Canada’s.

If you’re Canadian and that is not the side you’ve chosen, be prepared to be remembered for it.

If you’re looking to buy Canadian, this is an aisle-by-aisle guide I wrote to grocery shopping during the PREVIOUS tariff spat.

Many of the tips still hold true today globalnews.ca/news/4334388...

Avoiding products from south of the border that are on the tariff list is easier said than done.

Shorter headline:

New President legalizes political violence.
President Trump's move to pardon nearly all of the 1,600 rioters charged with storming the Capitol on Jan. 6 would effectively undo years of efforts by federal investigators to seek accountability for the mob assault on the peaceful transfer of power after Trump's loss in the 2020 election.
Trump Grants Broad Clemency to Jan. 6 Rioters
The extraordinary pardons and commutations extended to those who committed both violent and nonviolent crimes on Jan. 6, including assaulting police officers and seditious conspiracy.

In fairness, when a crisis scenario requires a resignation, the person who needs to resign is usually the last one to reach that conclusion.

Might be the most exciting holiday party since Nakatomi Plaza.

Reminder that TVO is funded by the Ministry of Education.

This didn’t happen because corporate media bosses weren’t making enough money.

The Ontario government decided what a world filled with misinformation needed, was fewer journalists.
Sounds like a horrendous day at TVO. My real sympathies to all involved, in this stupid business, and my disapproval to those who made the decision.
Just got laid off as editor-in-chief of TVO Today after eight years. Some of my very talented colleagues were also let go. Hire them for all your writing and editing needs. Hire me if they’re unavailable.

More later.

Last I checked, the constitution doesn’t allow for inciting a violent mob to retain power after losing an election either.
President-elect Trump has mused more than once that he might like to extend his next stay at the White House. But can he run for re-election again in 2028 and seek a third term? The simple answer: No, the Constitution does not allow it.

Here’s what the law says.
No, Trump Cannot Run for Re-election Again in 2028
The Constitution sets a two-term limit for presidents. Still, Donald J. Trump has repeatedly floated the idea that he might like to stay in the White House beyond his next term.
