Theory: Older people have trouble with technology not because it's complex or alien but because it is more often than not shit and they haven't been interested enough in it to learn the various strategies and techniques people use to get around the shitness.

Seems unfortunate. Who could have predicted this?
This looks rather meaningful.

Glad that someone has finally taken responsibility for the appalling assault on democracy that was the Jan. 6 insurrection.

Slightly confused that it's the Director-General of the BBC, but what do I know?

Seems very Tim Davie to resign in disgrace over something the BBC got right.

I don't think it's healthy or accurate to think of AI or any algorithm as 'deciding' or 'choosing' or otherwise having agency.

They follow a chain of inevitable logic according to decisions made (often unwittingly) at the time they were designed or their training material was selected.

I wonder how the 'we all hate reform' strategy looks if the polling narrows closer to 2029 and all the modelling suggests a hung parliament

Can't help feeling that 'stop Reform' rather relies on Reform looking like they might win - Reform *and* Labour 'losing' might be a lot of peoples ideal result

I think one of the most damaging things for politics has been the substitution of making the argument for something with the marketing pitch for it

This is largely the fault of the media environment - the case is dry and boring, the pitch has relatable moments, a catchy slogan and click-bait scope

The defense team presses Lairmore on whether the sandwich really 'exploded.' They return to the photo of the sandwich and wrapper on the ground.

"That sandwich hasn't exploded at all, has it?" defense asks.

"It looks like a little bit is coming out towards the bottom," Lairmore replies.

The more support the greens get the less likely I am to vote Green. Some sensible impulses and deserve to be listened to but a little too stuck in wishful thinking to be government material.

A criticism I'd level at Labour as well at the moment, although for different policy positions.
Greens - Lower bills through nationalising our public services, wealth tax on assets and huge increase in investment in our public services.

Labour - ID Cards, random statements about flags and Austerity 2.0.

But apparently the Green Party are the "vibes era?"

Make it make sense!
Politics is in a vibes era. Nigel Farage and Zack Polanski are proof of that. But maybe Keir Starmer can take positivity from Ruben Amorim.

I think we need to get away from the trap of thinking that algorithms 'make decisions' other than in a very vague colloquial way.

Algorithms are the encoding of pre-made human choices into a repeatable form.

If there is a skill issue to getting a benefit from AI then it seems it's more likely to be a bubble in terms of investment. It will effectively gate benefits based on the availability of (presumably expensive) human resources and cap the utility of infrastructure investment.

To a man with a generative AI, all problems begin to look like finding the most plausible sequence of tokens.

It's hard to put a precise number on it, but I think for about 80% of applications of AI I've seen so far we'd be better off without it.

Simply because it does nothing that needed to be done while costing resources that could be better used elsewhere

Not sure it won't be a net drag on growth.

Is the Reform MP who says she’s driven mad by TV adverts full of Black & Asian people a racist or realist? How many migrants would the Tories expel? & should the UK be selling fighter jets to Türkiye?

Feels like it's only a matter of time before there is an accidental gun battle between ICE and local police in the US. Can even see it being contrived by a third party, but hopefully no one is that stupid.

Can I simply suggest that whichever intrepid journalist manages to embed himself with ICE and remain there taking careful notes undetected for some months or a year will almost certainly win a Pulitzer Prize, which regrettably, will have to be forwarded to a holding facility in Guantanamo, Cuba.

Incredible to hear Russell's voice. And important to note that from the very beginning, some people on the left recognised the sadism and intellectual poverty of Bolshevism.

A Labour Strategy of "we need to get people who think we're objectionable idiots to vote for us by persuading them the alternative is worse then being governed by objectionable idiots"

Amongst other issues, it doesn't exactly scream "sustainable democracy" does it?

Tempting to make a comment on how unreliable the source material the agents use is, but really than just makes this so much worse.

Outside of the ethical considerations (which should also be fatal for the current Labour, Tory and Reform immigration proposals) the practical case for deporting the racists instead is not just stronger it's pretty overwhelming.
