Let the science begin!

Spring has sprung in Antarctica, our aircraft have landed, and #RRSSirDavidAttenborough leaves the UK tomorrow.

This season our teams will deliver more than 60 science projects at research stations, on the ship, and in remote deep field and marine locations.

"As a human being, I have so much trouble trying to think about the magnitude of the sea-level rise, that I’m not sure I have the capacity to really think it through."

Delighted that the fab @bas.ac.uk Communications team (modest of course!) has been shortlisted for a @cipr.co.uk Excellence Award for our work on the Ticket to Antarctica 🇦🇶 campaign 🙌

My communications roadshow of the north concludes 🙌
4 x talks over 3 days at universities in Leeds, Newcastle and Durham, about what comms looks like in 2025. It was a treat to talk to and advise some of the brightest ⭐️ minds in polar science.

If you were there, remember you are the expert 💪

Thwaites Glacier in West #Antarctica would add 65cm to global sea levels if it melted. Great explainer thread from BAS colleague @polarrobs.bsky.social
Some people on this and other social media platforms have been claiming that something dramatic is about to happen at Thwaites Glacier, and implying that this will result of an abrupt rise is sea level within a few years. So what's really going on? 🧵🧪

Add this to your podcast playlist! Great stories from our people about living and doing science in Antarctica. Even after 25 years in this job, I learn so much from listening to Iceworld ❄️🧊📚
Where better to study clouds than from a plane? 🌨️

Cloud physicist Floortje Van Den Heuvel chats about falling in love with the polar regions, quality time spent in Twin Otter aircraft 'Ice Cold Katy', and seeing ice crystals form inside clouds from the sky.

Very cool news and views from BAS space weather guru Richard Horne about the discovery of chorus waves in space 💥
👂 Or if you want to hear space’s dawn chorus for yourself, have a listen to his interview on Radio 4 earlier today: www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/... (the segment starts at 2:56:20)

Phew, It’s been quite a week! Everyone loved our recruitment drive on Blue Monday about ‘seriously remote work in Antarctica’ 🇦🇶 my favourite article was about the Captain of RRS Sir David Attenborough, a colleague I have huge respect for. Read this and smile! www.theguardian.com/environment/...
I’m obsessed with icebreaking: I was trained not to hit anything – now I drive my ship into ice 24/7
As the captain of a royal research ship, I break ice to get to British stations in the Antarctic. It’s great fun - but getting stuck is always a risk

A23a has finally escaped the vortex! 🏊‍♀️🌀

The biggest iceberg in the world is on the move again after a casual half-year sabbatical spent spinning in circles.

Our @magic.bas.ac.uk colleagues have illustrated A23's super circuitous 2024 journey via satellite imagery ⬇️

Did someone say 'White Christmas'?

Almost certainly, for folks at our stations in Antarctica and on the RRS Sir David Attenborough!

Christmas in Antarctica means operations and science projects are in full swing - but there's still time for fun ⬇️
