Thomas the Tank Engine and Superman have weirdly similar problems with originally being funny and mean and kind of a menace, but having that largely watered down

Thomas I get pissed at because making steam engines little shits is 1000% more authentic and whitewashing them is foamer bullshit

There’s some kind of cultural divide between tech furries and train museum boomers where I get along with that latter way better, nothing against the former but we just don’t click.

I think it’s the clunky visual immediacy and impetus to dumb things down vs make them sound impressive

Mermaiding makes sense as a concept but I cannot mentally detach it from being associated with corny kids shows because I grew up near Weeki Wachee. It’s always kind of surreal how popular it is

Electricity is the hardest magic system and the worldbuilding potential with electric trains is hilarious because you immediately get a weirdly realistic fantasy religion with the sheer amount of inconsistent practices and degrees of assimilation/observance involved

Increasingly tempted to ask the train place I volunteer at if they’ll sell one of the oooold Lackawanna pantograph springs they have in storage. There is basically no modern use for them they’re for a design from almost a century ago that’s probably never running powered in preservation

The fun thing about working on real trains is learning untold ways to kill fictional ones I hate, that they’d be too stupid to see coming, and the general erasure of human staff removes a LOT of safeguards. And people that actually work on them love this crap.

Somehow forgot the Strasburg train/crane crash was three years ago, I thought it was earlier this year

Anyways, learned that it’s a prime example of why you park cranes with the boom down and turned away from where a stray train could hit them

Actually considering looking into shipbuilding since my experience would fit their requirements well and it should be as stable as it gets with the Jones Act. If I end up getting in and going that way I’ll finally be obligated to make a marine sona.

Pumpkin cannibalism ft. 1000 degree oven

I need to know why graphic anthro corn/pumpkin violence is a running gag, I saw this kind of thing at Europapark too. I feel like there’s some wacky German folktale behind this.

Holy crap Main Street USA has Magnetic Rag playing, you NEVER hear that one casually!

Hell has frozen over and I decided to go to Disneyland Paris

More parks should have Blacklight Fish: the Ride. The first bit of Crush’s Coaster was great for that.

Also cackling at the tram drivers having uniform caps and leather and the Dementia Simulator jazz in the Tower of Terror queue

The most underrated part of French culture is that they’re way more into the Belle Epoque than Disneyfied Victorian times and way more into early electrical history vs sanitizing the hell out of coal and steel. So much healthier technologically.

Trying to help people figure out touch screens AND seperate contactless payment when neither of us speak the same language is an… experience lol. Lots of pointing and gesturing and typing things into google translate to show

Welp, orange schmuck and his economic dumbassery finally took my job, I’m laid off due to economic downturn come Halloween

The parkour gargoyles at Parc Asterix were one of my fav parts of the haunt and now I’m heavily weighing making a simple gargoyle suit. Literally just foam stuck to a spandex bodysuit and painted looks great. They’re supposed to be janky and humanoid and foam has the right texture already

My favorite theme park theme has slowly grown into “slightly expressionist creepy gothic medieval towns”. Or wildly expressionist. It’s just got to have gargoyles and tortured statues and creatures and a vague sense of being a fire hazard.

Damn, I usually have great luck with rides being open but Goudurix, formerly considered the world’s shittiest roller coaster, is somehow closed and probably never going to open today. Substantial reason why I went to France ngl.

Carnival workers being basically silent is a constant thing across three different countries now. Even in France it’s just thumbs up and nodding and gesturing, which is surprising since they seemed to be able to speak the language vs being migrant workers who don’t.

The single stupidest culture shock I’ve had in France was getting bagels that were just regular bread but round.

I keep trying to figure out why I hate ballet so much artistically and I think the answer is all that effort to have the impact of a butterfly fart. I hate some roller coasters and a lot of 1700s art for the same reason. But they’re not as hegemonic so I care far less

this livery kills me because it looks like Amtrak from another timeline.

Or even if Alsthom gave them a consolation prize of 40 year old locomotives today.

It’s depressing and revealing seeing US electric trains talked about way more in a French museum than any domestic ones.

They were a genuine case of the early 20th century being better and American exceptionalism but inconvenient to everyone in power
October 6, 2025 at 1:40 PM
Six Flags America is such a surreal experience between being actively encouraged to go around railroad crossing gates (down for maintenance, train hasn’t moved yet) and an area just labelled CLOWNTOWN with fences and tons of clown trash cans
September 27, 2025 at 4:05 PM
It’s sad that foamers do unhinged illegal things to interact with trains when museums will let you do SO much if you’re vaguely trustworthy and willing to follow rules. They’ll just casually teach you to run heavy machinery or crawl inside boilers. They WANT young people to want to do that

Being into trains has made me immediately understand the petromasculinity concept. Oh, THAT’S where the weird crap old British men project on trains comes from. Cultural notions of energy came from steam engines and always had weird baggage of being inherently male and Protestant
