For almost 2 years, the claim of mass aid diversion by Hamas has been the pretext for Israel's illegal policy of obstructing & restricting aid to Gaza.

It was never plausible.

Now, as deaths from starvation mount, senior Israeli military officials admit that it was a lie.

"The military officials ... said that the original U.N. aid op was relatively reliable and less vulnerable to Hamas interference than the ops of many of the other groups bringing aid into Gaza”

The Security Council failed to pass a resolution calling for a ceasefire on Wednesday because of one veto. It is time for the UN General Assembly to do the right thing and authorize peacekeepers to accompany humanitarian convoys.

The idea of (non forced) "voluntary displacement" of Palestinians is absurd
- no factual evidence that any/some/many want to be resettled
- 2 million people do not have homogenous preferences 🤯🤯🤯
- "forced" does not have to mean bombed out of their houses
👇👇👇👇
Many have correctly noted that forced transfer/deportation is a war crime & crime against humanity.
On “voluntariness,” it bears emphasizing that the forced nature of transfer can be established where the perpetrators take advantage of a coercive environment that precludes genuine choice.

… seems like an obvious collective redline.

If the reaction of your gov is, "we wait for the ICJ - other courts - to rule on genocide", your gov is not discharging its prevention duty under the Genocide Convention. Govs must develop processes & criteria to assess genocide risk concurrently, not in 10 years.

What does it mean for a STATE to have genocidal intent? (1) The archetype is an official policy to destroy a group, authored by political and military leaders, systematically implemented – a clear cut but not that common instantiation of state intent.

Very important reminder from @abclapham.bsky.social that irrespective of any ICC arrest warrants re. Gaza, States parties to the 1949 Geneva Conventions (all 196 of them) already have an obligation to prosecute or extradite grave breaches.

Relevant before Friday's ICC announcement. And after.
Listen now! The Geneva Conventions. Are they still fit for purpose? 75 years after their ratification we put them on trial. Do they stand the test of time?
