Prime Minister Ishiba closed his Hiroshima memorial speech by quoting a poem by Shoda Shinoe. It was published in 1947, in defiance of US Occupation authorities, who banned such poems.
At the time Shoda believed her act could have resulted in imprisonment or the death penalty.
