Today on Volts: sodium-ion batteries! They are lower in energy density than lithium-ion, but cheaper, safer, & made from abundant domestic materials. What are they good for? Peak Energy is using them for grid-scale energy storage. I dive into the business case with CEO Landon Mossburg.
What's the deal with sodium-ion batteries?
Landon Mossburg on beating lithium-ion on cost and safety with a grid storage system that has no moving parts.

Today on Volts: @chrislhayes.bsky.social has a new book out on the corrosive effects of the modern attention economy. We dig deep into what attention is, how it works, why it's so easy to steal, where industry is looking for new supplies, & whether democratic deliberation can survive. Great stuff.
Chris Hayes on the attention economy
A conversation about how attention was commodified, why it's so easy to steal, where industry is looking for new supplies, and whether democracy can survive this.

Driving back home on I-5 yesterday and was surprised to see such a valuable cargo without armed escort. I thought @brightoncap.bsky.social and I could plan a future "fast and furious"-style heist if egg prices keep climbing.

Came across this cartoon and it resonated with the enshittification episode on a few levels.
Today on Volts: I talk with the estimable Cory Doctorow about enshittification (the inevitable rot & customer exploitation of tech platforms) and how it might manifest in clean-energy tech, which will soon be running our vehicles and homes. Much to worry about!

Can we avoid the enshittification of clean-energy tech?
Cory Doctorow describes how software platform technologies go wrong and what it might look like when our homes and vehicles are on those platforms.

Studies of this sort are difficult to design and results subject to all sorts of error. But I thought it would make @brightoncap.bsky.social happy, and my family loves and consumes a lot of great eggs from a few family friends' chickens. So I want to believe.

This works for biodiesel because the fatty acids are not altered during trans-esterification. And even then, it takes work. For RD/SAF, once hydrotreating has occurred, there is no "fingerprint" to assess feedstock, so potential for fraud is higher, imo.
