Just received a nice email from a former undergrad, reporting that she has achieved her dream of admission to a PhD program in Classics and thanking me for helping her get from zero Gk/Latin, via postbac and MA, to the Ivy League.

We *must* keep fighting for a world where such dreams are possible.

“The requirement for ‘dual-loaded corridors’ and double stairwells, which was born out of early 20th century planning concerns, has since become a hindrance to creating larger units with greater natural light and ventilation and buildings with enhanced green space.”

A small glimmer of #LAfires good news: most LAUSD schools are open today Monday 1/13, but several districts remain closed. How long those stay closed is a measure of how severe this has been.

Nearly all of LAUSD will reopen on Monday. Several Eaton fire-area districts remain closed
LAUSD schools will open other than in Palisades and mountain areas. Schools in Pasadena Unified, La Cañada Unified and in Malibu will remain closed on Monday.

Yes! These are urban fires *not wildfires*

Planning / resource allocation has not accounted for ember transmission of the fire by high winds

This hard truth has been known for decades - unfortunately we have not addressed reducing that risk in a meaningful way.

We can do better - will we?
In Maui, in L.A., in Boulder, it was not the grass or the trees that set houses on fire. It was the neighbor’s house.

Or more precisely, high winds blew embers + flames from your neighbor’s house & landscaping onto your house.

How do we move forward? By being good neighbors & hardening all homes.
“The bottom line is the winds far outweigh the fuel in terms of fire spread,” said Jon Keeley, USGS fire ecologist “When you have these winds it makes fuels less relevant. And the fuels are definitely not relevant once it gets into the urban environment, because the primary fuels are the homes.”

Agree and in the same situation. And to compound the fire issue - winter fires have been unusual - this is now a new normal.
A morning of finding updates from friends and family impacted by the LA fires. The horror that fires bring is one of speed and destruction. Such a different pain than the long-drawn out damage of water events.
