Downside to the fall is that it's mostly cloudy, and that blocks the moon and stars... but sometimes! Sometimes... you'll have these rare clear nights. Those special nights of crisp cold and open skies is something ethereal ✨️🌙

Leading from a small courtyard to an old house in a local village, it appears that these steps have had little or no use in a while. Unless the owner scrapes the growth off, Nature will soon take over and return the scene to an insect haven.

An old, short flight of worn stone steps in an overgrown garden pr courtyard setting. All the treads and risers are covered in moss and a number of plants have established themselves and will soon flower and spread seeds. There are some green painted vertical metal rods at the edge of the steps, part of a handrail not in the picture, although it looks as if no-one has used the steps for a long time.

Caldwell 4 also called the Iris Nebula, or NGC 7023

This beautiful, blushing nebula is unique amongst its counterparts. While many of the nebulae visible in the night sky are emission nebulae — clouds of dust and gas that are hot enough to emit their own radiation and light — Caldwell 4, otherwise known as the Iris Nebula or NGC 7023, is a reflection nebula. This means that its color comes from the scattered light of its central star, which lies nestled in the abundant star fields of the constellation Cepheus. Located some 1,400 light-years away from Earth, the Iris Nebula’s glowing gaseous petals stretch roughly 6 light-years across. The Iris Nebula was discovered by German-British astronomer Sir William Herschel on October 18, 1794. (Herschel has an impressive track record, having also discovered the planet Uranus and having been knighted in 1816.) His Iris Nebula has an apparent magnitude of 7. Located near the North Celestial Pole and the North Star (Polaris), Caldwell 4 is nearly impossible to see from the Southern Hemisphere. For best viewing in the Northern Hemisphere, use a telescope in early autumn to star hop from the two brightest stars in the constellation Cepheus. Since the Iris Nebula is faint and diffuse, dark skies away from city lights are recommended for viewing it. This nebula is of particular interest to scientists because of its colors. Reflection nebulae glow because they are made up of extremely tiny particles of solid matter, up to 10 or even 100 times smaller than dust particles on Earth. These particles diffuse the light around them, giving the nebula a second-hand glow that’s typically bluish (like our sky). While the Iris Nebula appears predominantly blue, it includes large filaments of deep red, indicating the presence of an unknown chemical compound likely based on hydrocarbons. Studying nebulae like this one helps astronomers learn more about the ingredients that combine to make stars.

This image is a peek into the heart of the Orion Nebula, which blankets the entire image. Here, the young star nursery resembles a dense, stringy, dusty rose cloud, peppered with thousands of glowing golden, white, and blue stars. Layers of cloud around the edges of the image, and a concentration of bright stars at its distant core, help convey the depth of the nebula. This composite image features two star clusters, viewed through a churning tunnel of golden cloud. The cloud creates a border around the entire image, like a thick swirling smoke ring. Beyond it, in the open center, is a vast field of neon purple specks. These specks are young stars observed by Chandra. Within the central field, two cluster groupings are suggested by separate swirls of faint, steel blue mist. One sits near our upper right. The other is near the bottom left, partially obscured by the golden yellow ring cloud. This image features the Cassiopeia A supernova, an expanding ball of matter and energy ejected from an exploding star. Here, rings of neon blue and brilliant white emit veins of polished gold. The rings and their arching veins encircle a place of relative calm at the center of the supernova remnant. This hole at the center of the circle, and the three-dimensionality conveyed by the rings and their arching veins, give this image of Cassiopeia A the look of a giant, crackling, electric blue donut. X-rays detected by Chandra show debris from the destroyed star and the blast wave from the explosion. A massive cloud of gas and dust is seen in dark, dusty red, with its outer portions a translucent, ethereal gray. Several stars and distant galaxies are scattered throughout the image.

The planet Uranus is on a black background just left of center. It is colored light blue and displays a large, white patch on the right side as well as two bright spots and a surrounding system of nested rings oriented vertically. Just below the planet at the 7-o’clock position is a faint blue point. Brighter blue points are at 8 o’clock, 5 o’clock, and 3 o’clock. Farther from the planet, two additional blue points are at 7 o’clock and 5 o’clock. Faint orange smudges are scattered in the background.
