New research makes plain the limitations of existing #DisabilityData measures. #DisabilityHealth researchers can use their recommended limitation statements to explain how ACS6 and WGSS data may not capture all people with disabilities.

Today, more detailed proposed budget docs for FY 2026 were released. This has the details of the President’s budget. This all still has to be reconciled with versions of FY26 budget from the House and Senate too and voted on and passed before it becomes final, but contains a lot more details.

Recent actions to restructure HHS have made the future of ACL and NIDILLR uncertain. Their programs and research are valuable and essential for the disability and aging communities. Community living is the most fiscally efficient and life-giving way that we can support people who might be pushed into institutional living. ACL programs help make interdependent community living possible. NIDILRR research provides the evidence for why this matters.

In fiscal year 2023, NIDILRR grantees produced: 641 peer-reviewed publications, 246 non-peer reviewed publications, 173 information products, 63 tools, measures and intervention protocols and 47 technology products and devices for people with disabilities.

NIDILRR’s work has empowered and uplifted disabled researchers and emerging scholars. NIDILRR’s ARRT Program funds institutions of higher education to provide postdoctoral training, supporting approximately 70 research fellows every year. . In FY23, 51 NIDILRR grants were led by a main PI who self-identified as disabled, representing 19.5% of currently active main PIs of NIDILRR grants. Grantees employ advanced methodologies to conduct research, including randomized controlled trials, longitudinal studies, and qualitative studies.

NIDILRR programs fund research toward the development of new knowledge and innovative technological devices, prototypes, measurement tools, interventions, and other informational products to enhance community living, health and function, and employment among people with disabilities.

As of 2023, NIDILRR has awarded more than 300 Switzer Fellowships to support individual disability research projects. In 2022, Ph.D. student Ayse Zengul at the University of Alabama at Birmingham was awarded the Switzer Research Fellowship. During her fellowship, she developed disability inclusive nutrition guidelines for people with physical disabilities. She designed a personalized nutrition recommendation expert system, (PNRES) to help improve nutrition for people with disabilities.
