One of the biggest paths to acting on climate is improved land use! Bonus—this can also make transportation and housing costs more affordable, shore up local and state financial stability, grow jobs, and strengthen rural and urban communities alike.

KIDS ARE PEOPLE
One more thing. When I wrote about this study showing one-third of Americans don't drive, people were messaging me saying this cannot be true for LA.

In LA County *23 percent* of the population is under 16. Kids are people! We must plan for their movement, just like all nondrivers. Hope that helps!
Highly recommend diving into NRDC's study on car access, which @keawilson.bsky.social wrote about here: usa.streetsblog.org/2025/10/02/report-16-million-have-no-car-access-at-all

Where Nadir was killed, 14% of LA households are car-free. But the infrastructure does not match that reality

Rode the trail last week. So amazing and thank you @cmlewisgeorgew4.bsky.social for your support and riding a bike!
It was a beautiful day to celebrate the opening of the Metropolitan Branch Trail from Fort Totten to Takoma!

The Metropolitan Branch Trail is more than just a bike path -- it connects us to each other, to schools and work and recreation, and to a vibrant alternative to sitting in traffic.

“Propped on a stick he viewed the August weald…He hobbled blithely through the garden gate, And thought: ‘Thank God they had to amputate!’ “

May we all be able to be citizens of life that age to comfortable years.

DC leaders know what DC communities need.

Trump's tax plan would have cost DC $600 million in lost revenue. DC Council divorced local taxes from the federal plan, and instead used that money to create a groundbreaking tax credit for DC families. www.washingtonpost.com/dc-md-va/202...
D.C. set to become first city in the U.S. to implement local child tax credit
Decoupling local tax policies from the federal tax cuts passed by Congress means the city will avoid a revenue hit of nearly $600 million.

If you want to know more about New York City's new mayor's plans for housing policy, check out my thread:
What are the stakes for housing if Mamdani is elected mayor? My round up 🧵

1—Rent stabilization.

Mamdani wants to freeze rent levels on 1 m rental units subject to stabilization.

Mayor has appointment power over the rent guidelines board, but changes may take until 2027, depending on Adams:
Can Eric Adams Really Block a Mamdani Rent Freeze? - City Limits
If Eric Adams appoints new members to the Rent Guidelines Board before his term expires, it could make it harder for frontrunner Zohran Mamdani to fulfill his promise to freeze rent.

Cars are extensions of the person themselves. You can’t slow, block, or criticize them without it being seen as a direct assault on the driver or culture themselves. It’s illustrative of how politicians lead and are blind to others that don’t have that extension or aren’t pathologically connected.
“mocking the ford bronco is beyond the pale. it was unjustified. it was factually without base. that ford bronco does better in the snow than the suburbans we use by state police. it’s the last of the large broncos, it is a collectors item & i believe it will be one day” — thats a truth social post

Absolutely amazing: they've got so much solar in Australia that they need more people to use more of it, so the gov't has instructed energy retailers to offer *at least three hours of free power* during the middle of the day.

Meanwhile fossil-addled US struggles with an energy-price crisis ...
Energy retailers to be directed to offer free power three hours a day
Saying there is enough solar power for everyone in the daytime, Climate Change Minister Chris Bowen will direct retailers to provide three hours of free power every day to consumers.

Quick update: A federal judge ruled this afternoon that the Trump administration has to use contingency funds to pay for SNAP benefits. City officials tell me they are reviewing the decision, but either way city funds will be available to ensure no benefit payments are missed.
Federal funding for food assistance programs is expected to lapse this weekend, and the Trump administration has refused to use a contingency fund.

D.C. will cover the cost of residents' November SNAP and WIC benefits, Mayor Muriel Bowser announced last night.

D.C. will use its own money to pay for SNAP amid shutdown

It is widely agreed that robust LNG exports from the US will have the effect of globalizing the price of NG, which will in turn have the effect of *raising the price of domestic NG*.

So why aren't all the "focus on affordability" people fighting LNG exports?

How much of this is going to impact the Potomac, Washington Shipping Channel, and Chesapeake Bay? Will pollutants flow up the Anacostia during high tide? Does this run counter to EPA’s and District’s NPDES permit? Does the soil contain PFAS? Who’s responsible for longer-term impacts if found?
